I find everyone is difrent...

However I reckon EVERYONE should get there ass out and travel on their own. Theres realy no harm and in most cases will be the best and most amazing thing you could ever do at a young age.

Long story as short as I can.... I always wanted to travel after highschool. I normaly planed to go on a trip to napal with my school in grade 12, however got kicked out of the trip so got my money back and got tables :c-tard: Now short of money and slaked off and thought maybe I should do some up grading and go into uni like always.

That summer after grad co-workers of mine gave me tons of intresting career advise I never thought of or looked into that only require maybe 1 year of college and no worries about upgrading. I thought it was intresting but I couldnt stand the thoguth of school and time flew by... So I skiped that idea and saved to get out of this western contenent.
Took me awhile to finaly decide where and found someone dedicated enough to tag along with for the first bit. From then on my life was open to anything! I ended up staying in Australia till my visa ended and they kicked me out :090: (Year of my life)

Back home where I left off I had no clue what I was to do and only $200 levt (at least i wasnt in debt) I said when leaving Australia I would be doing whatever I could to head straight for england or back to australia to study and meet up with friends. Well I got back into my old daycare job agin and looked into all difrent kinds of realated job/careers to get into. At first i wanted to continue what i was doing and go off to travel and teach. However with war and sars going around I thought to stay home to catch up with friends and familey. Just my luck I ended up making it back just at the right time to look into programs and aply for school. I was lucky enough to realy find somthing that I was intrested in and ever so keen to learn arbout. Even better I got in and will be enrolling at capp college this sept!

Amazing what can happen out of the blue. Im proud i acomlished dreams and have some more in mind. I will do them in the next 2-10 years for sure, just havent realy planed in concrete when and how. I never pictured/planed the last 2 years, but they worked out better then I could imagin and im surprised what I have ahead of me already!?!

Anyways moral of my story to me is:
Just do what you want, work for it, and do what makes you happy!
There are ppl who will and belive or told school is best and what they want right after high school... good for them (no sarcasim)
However im not at all like that and am now going to school for a whole difrent reason then before. I cant emphesis enough what an amzing life leason, experience, and what ever else I got by leaving home and making a new one on the other side of the world alone and so young. I could go on... but if your even just thinking about it GO DO IT!!! Right now our dollar is high, flights are cheep, take some months off and live your own life somwhere else... =)

Its better then it sounds.

Courtney your in for the time of your life and im proud!

I've been graduated for 4 years now (class of 99 YeAH! lol). I went to school part time, while working part time<--which turned into full time work and maybe one or two courses. BUT I want to get on with my life, move into the next chapter, and I am in september. I'm heading to BCIT for their radio broadcasting course for the next 2 years. I'm quitting my job at the end of July, and going to school full time! Who knows what else will be in store for me. I still live with my parents in Aldergrove, but I have a feeling a move closer to school will be in store in the near future.

I wasn't entirely sure of what I wanted after highschool, so I took some time and did general studies and found radio interesting. After my radio program, I may go back to school...for english perhaps. (we'll see how much those student loans bring me down though first. lol).

well, if you're serious about school, add in the cost of the trip - any money you made on the trip if you're working.

then work out how much money you could have been making working full time.

so right now, depending on trip length, you're behind anywhere from 2-20 thousand+ dollars.

i'd say that could do harm, especially if you need to take out a student loan for school.

not that im saying travelling is bad, but it definately is sickeningly expensive if you factor in all costs, though incredibly enjoyable.

i think i'm leaning a bit to the older spectrum of people here. I'm 23 now and I finished a degree last year but decided I wanted to get another. I'm thinking about changing my mind again since personal reasons may keep me in vancouver instead of returning to halifax for law, sociology and social anthropology.

The worst thing I did not do was take a year off after high school. But i did learn after flunking 2 straight semesters and having to withdraw that post-sec was not going to be a peace of cake like high school. So after i had to withdraw - I worked, got my own place, bought a car, lived in europe for awhile and tried to figure out exactly what i wanted to do with my life before going back to school.

travelling is highly recommended!!

My parents even now still pressure me to keep going to school, but after a whole year of hitting the books hard and living in crappy Halifax I'm pretty tired of education at this point. So right now i'm pursuing my non-academic interests and focusing my energy on them before I determine what I want to do come september.

The best advice I can give is do what you love, it makes it all easier in the end, even if your parents are not supportive they will hopefully come around when they see that you are trying to do what you feel is best for yourself.

MistressSpankME - I teach drums ;) i'm thinking of doing a few group FnK lessons @ the beach since a lot of people are interested and wanna throw down, drumset or hand drumming ;)

flight + helth encurance + visa = $2000
saved up cash in canada= $4000
money all to gether made in australia=$11900
Birthday/christmas money=$400
Time of my life= priceless and worth ever cent agin and agin!

All together that comes to $15840 in Canadian $
Anyways I came back with only $168.00 Can. The things I could of done with that money instead... HAH well im back working and saveing agin now that I feel more then ready and eager to get into school and will suffer being a broke ass for a while. But boi did I ever do an amzing thing so young. Most backpackers where 23-29 and all said they wished they started traveling much younger... So im eager to get my ass out agin to some exotic place when i finish some school in 1.5 years WOO HOO!

Thing is when stuck in a home countrey with friends and familey you have so meny influences that you dont notice but realy do afect you. Go travel and get away from them. I too almost thought my only "successful" option was to do school and im still trying to confince my dad that that trip was probly the most successful thing and highlight of my life! Mom did say i should get some ballace going on now. So im gonna get some schooling done, and then ill be able to make some better moeny and travel more ;)

Hmmm.. yes, I actually had travelling in mind. I've only heard good things from people who have done so, and you're clearly one of them :P

I might go to Toronto this year, and plan on travelling to places like LA, San Fransisco, etc etc to see the world a little more and work with some of the best photographers around there and check out the designers and stores. I think it would be a wonderfull experience. I would love to go somewhere tropical as well, I mean th e only places I've ever been outside of BC was alberta and LA when I was still quite young. I think I'm going to look into that a little more, as well as going to school part-time when I do decide to go back.

Thanks for the advice, I think I'll just start looking more into all these things, and I'll go back to school when I feel like I've accomplished enough of what I want to do, and am still able to do some during, and after school.

only if your time is worth nothing, add another 10-20 grand based on what you could have been making staying home (you said you went for a year, right?), and you have yourself a 25-35 grand nest egg (well, i guess minus the 11 grand you made in austrailia).

im not saying its bad, or you shouldn't do it! im not saying it wasn't the best thing for you, as it seems like it was.

just showing how incredibly expensive travel is if you're going to school after. the other side of the coin, if you will.

After i graduate next year i definatle plan on taking a year off. One, i plan to work for that full year saving as much as possible for my future and post-secondary needs. During that year off i plan on travelling to Europe with 3 of my best friends for 3 months and with maybe 2 other people. I'm sooooo excited i can't wait. I know it's going to cost alot but i've wanted to do it all my life and i know if i don't i will regret it, which is the last thing i want to have to deal with. I have a full course load for my grade 12 year taking as many possible courses as i can without even taking a spare block, which i don't mind cause i want to keep all doors open as possible even though i'm sure what i want to do but you never know right. After my year off i'm planning to go to BCIT into the Accounting program...my goal is to be a CGA or CA. I'd also love to get into the marketing field because i love business and marketing/accounting all together. I'm not worried about taking a year off at all because i definately know i'll be going back to school for post-secondary. While in post secondary i plan to work as much as i can within my school schedule to pay off my school fees and save up for the future. I would also love to continue acting/modeling and take a step forward in my art skills. Wheni begin my career my ultimate dream would be to live in a huge loft in vancouver or somewhere like New York because i love the city and the city live.

p.s.-I also plan to rave 4 life !@#$% :keebler:

I see your point rawb.

it's not like the idea of travelling has never crossed my mind. the way I see it, I'd rather wait several years to get my BSN and save up to go travelling with a job that pays $20-$40/hr rather than go while I'm younger and save up with a job that pays $8+/hr, come back and still be working my ass off at a job that pays 8+/hr to pay for school/other stuff.

yes, I'm sure the travelling experience was amazing. but in it's own way, I also think that post-secondary education itself has been and is an amazing experience...

yeah, I guess I am a geek.

yeah nerds unite!

while my friends were taking trips i was pounding pavement for jobs so i could make some money for school. i got lucky, and now 2 jobs, 3 years later i have a job im great at, the youngest guy making more than some of the people here with certs and degrees.

so yeah what started as making some money for school turned into something great.

and i can tell you that as great as travelling is, so is the feeling of being totally independent and financially secure, with lots of contacts. now i can afford to go wherever i want, and i work 4 days on, 4 days off so i have lots of time to do fun things, as well as stretch my 2 week vacation into 20 days if i surround it by weekends!

School is cool if you know exactly what you want to do and are doing well already. Personaly after traveling I dont like that idea at all.
I could of stayed and gotten promoted at my old job witch i loved to death and bin going through school well on now and posibly have my own place or car. However with the experience ive set myself and mind on a much higher level. Not saying im smarter... but the world and whats all out there has gone way past what i can imagine. Personaly that was the most important thing to get by in my life at that point.

The big probleme ive seen with meny backpackers and ppl now is thinking do school first... jsut get that well paying job now because who likes a shitty $8 paying job? In meny casses what heppens with that is after you finish your4-? years, your now entering your mid 20's. Much older, mature(not as crazy and party mood) and now your wanting that high paying job to go travel. HA!! Well guess what... you jsut got started on that job and dont want to lose it by asking for 3-12 months off... cus you probly cant! So your stuck here... and probly also stuck paying off student loans, and that new car your putting paymants on... and probly want to move out of your parents house now eh? So wheres the time and money for travel?

When so young and clueless theres no better time to take a year off cus youll probly never have that chance in life agin!

I treasure my 18-25years and want to make them the best i can.
It was almost a chore of mine to take off a whole year and travel... but its done, i know what its like, and i made the best of my youth out in the world rather then in books. Well thats all that matters to me.

Bottom line is Do what you want to do, AND BLOODY DO IT!
Ppl are more then right when they say you can do anything you want if you put your mind to it. Just have to work for it.... and you better not be lie'ing when you say its school!

Rhiannon, I think it's awesome how you were able to have the guts to just go out and travel on your own. but you make it seem like going to school right away is just a waste of your youth and not something you can gain much life experience from.

I too treasure my 18-25 years. to me, school's a lot more than just books. I've learned a lot of things that I've been able to apply to my daily life. I've learned to be more skeptical and am able to see the world differently with the knowledge I have acquired. I've learned about time and stress management, realized my passions and love for learning while getting closer to achieving my goals.

and I personally wouldn't give up those experiences for the world....

I'll be turning 23 when I finish my BSN degree.
23 isn't too old to travel.
I think it's better to be a bit more mature (and have a bit more life experience) when you're travelling around the world anyways.

mugsy is on a distinguished road
i took a year off and mostly was a bum, painting and sketching as much as i could, and working here and there making enough money for supplies and fun. i found it to be excellent for myself, made my passion for art develope even more. i found that being stuck here actually helped me, made me struggle. also made me realize alot. most would say that i should have traveled a little bit, but i realized alot without even doing that. i always thought things like getttin a good job, a good family and a quaint house was success... but now i think differently. i know that being stuck in one place for the rest of my being is not gonna work for me, i loved that i was doing odd end jobs through out the year. i learned i love the struggle.

i got into studio art at capp, and i couldnt be more delighted, starting in september i know im gonna be in it for 2 years, which isnt that much and by the time im done ill be ready for whatever i feel like at that time.

honestly taking a year off was the best choice ive made. im not saying its for everyone, cause i have seen alot of my friends be extremely successful and happy in their first year of post-secondary.

also dont look at school as something that ties you down, just find your passion and go to school for that. i get to paint and draw five days a week next year in a big space... i couldnt imagine it being any better.

i think the best most well learned people i have met, dont have plans. they take it day by day, ready to turn completely around if neccessary, and ready to jump off a cliff if need be. yes goals are a wicked thing to have, but i rather make mine short term, makes life seem longer and makes me have way more accomplishments to be proud of. i am excited about not knowing where im gona be after school, maybe ill end up in hawaii, maybe fiji, or maybe alaska. who knows maybe ill stay here....

but enough rambling.... just have fun. do what makes you happy, dont let yourself be influenced by anyone but yourself. in the end for everyone, its yourself that matters.

I dont mean to shuf down your throught that traveling is the only way. I just get so bothered by seeing so meny ppl not push themselfs to actualy go do it. Its mostly just talk for ppl and never happens.

funny thing is, as much as ppl may say your never to old to travel... you never to old to go to school. Right now im taking a carrer program to be a teacher asistance... After I want to get my ass out traveling with it so it will be posible for me to get sponcered in other country's and live there. Im thinking maybe when i reach 30ish I may go back to school and up grade/ study to be a teacher.

Im still gonna stick by traveling right after school though. There are parents out there who force their kids to live and see some of the world out there on their own b4 post secondary :c-tard:

Hahaha, I used to be a bookworm, and have the ability to be. But I HAVE to be able to create things.

I actually was told MANY times that I am "wasting my brains" because I am going into fashion/art/web design/ etc and not something more intellectual or something that will gain me a "higher status". Next person that says that to me is getting a slap across the face.

About the traveling, I can't see myself going and living somewhere for a year or two anyways. It was obviously a great idea for you Rhiannon, but I thik i'm going to do some travelling both before AND after I get my degree. And if I go back to school in the next year or two, the oldest I'll be when I get my Bachelors Degree of applied arts in Fashion Design And technology., is 25/26. That's not old at all. My fathers side of the family has spent/pends their whole life traveling all over the world and it never seems to disrupt their jobs or family life at all.
