first of all, I should mention that fibre is a type of complex carbohydrate. fibre does not digest carbs, but does help with with delaying glucose absorption, slowing starch hydrolysis and speeding transit through the gastorintestinal tract and also contributes to satiety (feeling full). and again, your body wouldn't have to store more fat cells if there weren't excess calories in your body to begin with.

so from what i seem to know, the amount you exercise (and eat your bran in the morning) really determines the fate of you either gaining muscle mass or a fat ass.
food doesn't make you gain muscle. exercising does.

it's not "no carbs at all", but no more than 50 g of carbohydrates a day I think. you're right, a lack of carbs probably would be bad for the brain since the brain uses glucose as it's "fuel", and carbs are the most efficient source of glucose. you can get a small amount of glucose from glycerol and protein may also be converted to glucose, but this can be hard on your kidneys due to the increased production of nitrogenous wastes ithas to excrete.

not only that, but the atkins diet is generally high in saturated and total fat which increases the risk of cardiovascular diseases and the types of foods you'd eat are usually lacking in very important nutrients. the lack of carbs also prevents the full digestionof fats which can result in ketosis. whether or not this is really bad for you, I'm not sure. but my kin 110 class has taught me that this can lead to metabolic acidosis and cardiac arrhythmias, and even worse, death.

*edit* my argument is rather one-sided... here's something from ED that might help you see the other side: http://www.electronicdynasty.com/for...id=2139&page=2

yeah the atkins diet makes you really sluggish and slow for the first little while because of the lack of carbs
but your body will go through a metobolic change and becomes a fat burning (instead of fat storing) "machine"
you can cheat on the weekends and load up on carbs for the upcoming weekdays. so it isn't always super low carbs
(gives you an insulin spike)
I find that it gives you more energy

the Idea behind the high fat intake is that your body is starved of fat from most diets, because of this it stores any kinda fats that you eat (even bad fats)
when you have an exess of fats going through you your body will use the good fats and let the bad ones flow right through

the only down side is that if taken for a really long time it can be harmfull

thats my 2 cents

yeah, but other reasons why you lose weight include the depletion of glycogen stores, which leads to water loss. not to mention the caloric restriction. I mean, how long can you really go for eating eggs, steaks and beef for breakfast, lunch and dinner? also because of your low carb-intake, you're at risk for ketosis, which also inhibits appetite.

yeah but there are other things like Fish, chicken, bran anything, yohgurt, low carb protien bars, burgers, prawns ect....

I wouldn't ever recomend going on the Atkins diet
but when used as a guide line it is extremely efective
and I've seen people loose around 30 lbs in about 3 months
and keep it off

I didn't mean to imply that all you would eat is eggs and beef, but I'm just implying that there doesn't seem to be a huge variety of foods to choose from.

I've yet to meet anyone who's ever been on the atkin's diet keep the weight off for more than a year, but that's just me.

I agree, it may sound great for some people who wanna lose weight quick and fast... but then again, starving yourself helps you lose weight quick and fast...

personally, I would never try it as a weight loss method.. but hey, if it works for you, it's your choice.

in fact :)
over 95% of people who start Atkins and The Zone can not stick to it and drop out usually occurs within the first 3 months
the 5% that do are usually blown away by their success, and are able to stick to it for life (Michael Sole MD, Toronto Hospital - cardiology)

that's astonishing numbers
so in my totally inexpert opinion it's likely not the approach for most people

but for those 5%
whoo-hooooo!!!

i don't get as many cravings as I used to.. but for any craving, fruit works. Fruit has become one of my all-time favorite desserts.

as for diets, I don't believe in crash diets. I'm against anything that denies you of a certain food group. It's just unrealistic. Kind of like the protein diet. I mean, do you realy expect to be eating meat for the rest of your life? Where's the quality of livvinggg.. once you get so sick of yourself you'll binge on everything you denied yourself of and you'll give into your other cravings.. it just doesn't stop at that point. Everything you lost you'll gain TIMES TWO.

if it sounds extreme than it's too extreme for me. I like everything in moderation.. I don't deny myself of anything but I don't do too much of one thing.. heh.

how can you get tired of meat there are so many types
salmon, tuna, halibut, prawns, shrimp, oysters, squid,
then all the ways you can cook them
the many different cuts of beef including ground chuck and the way you can marinade and cook that

Chicken and all the ways you can cook that, including stirfry , eggs
and the different salads you can have with eggs and chicken

pork, bacon, sausage

you could eat only meat products and never repeat the same meal for probubly a good year or two

after a while you will be glad you arn't eating white rice and white bread ( the worst things for you)

sorry I'm jsut really bored and love meat
