does Vancouver still have a horrible nightlife?

From what i remember, or at least from what i can remember 5 years ago, Vancouver had a laughable nightlife. No Techno, No Detroit House, No Electro, No nothing really....well except for "progressive"...

Im talking about raves that only featured hard house and cheesey progressive trance parties held at Riverside, or Plaza of Nations.

I remember a typical lineup for a big party consisted usually of the following artists:

Binary Finary
Dj Scot Project
Anne Savage
Dj Sakin and Friends

blah blah blah....you get the idea.

Has anything changed since?
Has the scene matured? Can it even sit in the same league as the bigboys like Montreal?

I dont live in Canada anymore, but im still interested in hearing your opinions...

Club scene's where its at. I'm finding more and more diversity brewing in this city ever since I moved back here a year ago than I did when I lived here five years ago.

The 4am extension over the summer hasn't hurt either. Here's hoping to keeping it. :smoke1:

Obviously, you have no clue about what this city featured for its club nightlife back then. I guess you would have been underage and yes, the rave scene was (and still is) majorly hurting. There was quite a bit more than Progressive just being spun though. Anyhooker, on weekends they're open til 4 AM now and there is a large variety of electronica being dropped at various different venues now-a-days.

P.S. If you were all about the Plaza of Nations and Riverdale, I would take it that you knew nothing of the private smaller parties taking place back then. They were ...juss a lil' bit better *wink*

You are probably right. Perhaps i didnt look hard enough, although i wouldn call something like Simple 1 exactly a small and private party.

5 years ago i was old enough to get into clubs so that discredits your assumption that im underraged. I never really went to the plaza or riverdalee parties. I did go to one called XENO which i think was held at some arena, but i was never a big fan of huge parties. For one, I didnt enjoy the music, especially when every track the DJ played was probably a Euro remix version of Sarah Mcglauchlin.

Im not doubting that there wasnt small little getogethers that played different styles of beats, but I remember being fairly disappointed in the nightlife in general. Although you are right, I havent been back for a while and im sure the 4AM bylaw can only make things better. I guess we will just have to see. Glad to hear things are a bit more diverse now.

Lack of diversity, that has always been the problem with the larger parties in vancouver, they're pretty much carbon copies of one another. Not to say these cookie cutter parties were'nt around years ago, because there were tons of them as well. If you're going to see any top quality acts in this city that stray slightly from the norm you're going to find them in the club scene. The vancouver nightlife has become great, a lot of quality nights out there, but just like rawb said you gotta know where to look.

nightlife in this city has always been great at the club level for the size of our population.....if you thought it sucked because the raves were boring and they only played trance and you didn't bother checking out the clubs you seriously missed out during your time here.....

vancity gets some good headlines sporadically...

but out here, we get them every week almost...

last night...at Kool Haus...we had:

Goldie.
Shy FX.
Bailey.
Matrix.
Clipz.
MC Armanni.

and all of our locals...ie visionary, lush, mc bandit, natural mc, evahfresh, illfingaz

all that for 20 bucks.

vancity could never do it up like that.

A scene is not necessarily 'lacking' because it doesn't cater to your specific interests.
