WhenI worked at aritzia I met this one lady that was real insecure about being from surrey. She didn't really seem to want to input her information into our database but I somehow convinced her into it. SHe was just telling me that she sometimes gets dirty looks or comments every time she tells some one (this is downtown robson we're talking about) that she's from surrey.. and the thing was. after her and I had this discussion about surrey stereotypes, I rung her juicy sheer turtle neck shirt in, and told her what the price was... (100$). and she froze. She didn't realize it was so expensive and was telling me that she was embarassed of the fact, especially after our surrey convo, that she couldn't afford that price. it was COMPLETELY understable though, because honestly, for an ugly sheer turtle neck like that, i would not have even thought of paying 100$ for it. It was just really awkward for the both of us, because I was trying to make her feel less uncomfortable, and I felt bad that she should even have to feel that way. i just think it's a shame that any stereotype, can turn from light humour, to absolutely degrading. That's just an example of how harsh stereotypes can be..
I don't think that people living in a certain location should have to feel any less because of where they live. It's stupid, because people from those degraded areas often can't defend themselves, cause observers would be like "you're just defending it cause you're FROM so-and-so".. or if they even jokingly behave in a way that fits the stereotype layed upon them, observers woud be like "I KNEW IT! NO WONDER YOU'RE FROM SURREY" It's sad that, a lot of people that do chime in with the stereotypes have only been to the area a couple of times.. and every time they do it's as though they look for examples to justify their pre-conceptions. |

I think that the people who automatically make those generalizations are saying more about themselves than the people they are talking about. To me, it shows a lack of desire to actually get to know a person, and rather a desire to get a quick laugh out of their friends.

All I have to say about Surrey is that the worst area of Surrey is considered its center (Surrey Central), and most people's line of reasoning would be "okay well if I'm in the middle of this city and it looks like this, well than it's a pretty shitty city". So no wonder Surrey has a bad rep, Whalley is a fuckin mess and is considered the center!
I ask those who are skeptical about Surrey to visit Fleetwood, South Surrey, Fraser Heights, and a variety of other yuppified suburban Surrey neighborhoods to see that well, Surrey ain't all that bad....just don't go to any clubs here, ever! |

Personally, I think Surrey is awesome... of course it has its ups and downs... BUT
I have lived in Surrey most of my life... in fleetwood, and the only time i see a crack head is when i go to Whalley so i guess Whalley gives surrey a bad name.. from my experiences Surrey is packed with awesome people who just wnna chill and have fun like me... dont get my wrong of course u get those people who love startin shit and who just cause problems.. but give me a break can u honeslty say that people dont be that shit where u are from??? |

I'm in surrey... I couldn't agree more with mateo's post... surrey has its problems, but the problem areas of surrey maybe make up 5% of its land, yet 95% in people's minds... I worked down in 135a st for a non-profit agency before and I can honestly say that the problem areas are the three blocks surrounding 135a, surrey central, and MAYBE newton exchange (though I've never felt like I've been in danger there)... its sad to see the entire surrey area getting judged over a few small parts of it...
