Not one of those things that you want to have to remember but it's so significant that you can't just let it go. I still get this wierd feeling in my gut when I hear or read about it.

My heart still goes out to the victim's families.

^ I'm just wondering what it'll be like at work today.

Here's hoping there aren't any "surprises".

Word Trade Center body count: 2,749
Iraq civilian body count: approx. 45,000, being as the US doesn't keep count

All of these deaths are tragic, but I don't think there's going to be any parades and ceremonies for the Iraqi dead, which out number the American loss 16 times over. In the end, all the every day people are dead and the corporations all walked away billionaires.

45,000? Perhaps three years ago. The Iraqi body count was argueably at 200, 00 a year ago.

The further we go, the deeper in we get, is it too late to turn back?

its amazing... i can't remember what it was like living in a pre-9/11 world...

What I can remember is talkikng with people from India, Pakistan and anywhere that the "terrorists" were from (Remember the "If your country is full of brown people, we're probably going to bomb you" syndrome?) and hearing about the absolute horrors they went through at the boarder, the interrogation, the humiliation... it wasn't pleasant. It had never been like that before.

The bullshit "you can't have deouderant or toothpaste on planes" was another winner that we all saw go into effect just the other week.

Are our skies safer for it?

Nope. Not really.

I haven't heard of any "brown" man trying to do any crazy shit with anything since then.

I remember the FBI shooting a whitey in Florida not too long ago because he was mentally ill while his wife was screaming "he's ill, hes not a terrorist".

There's so much more to add to this, but alas, I really don't have the energy.

Basically, the world has changed, and it certianly hasn't been for the better... everything happens for a reason, but 5 years later, I still don't see how some good can come out of all this

I agree with a lot of what you're saying.
My boyfriend is 1/2 Iranian, born and raised the the States. Every time he goes to board a plane, he has to go through the bomb detecting machines. Even when he went on a family trip, his little brother, at age 12, had to go through. I understand that they're just taking precautions, but a 12 year-old simply because his last name is Persian? Sad.

The documentry is called Why We Fight and it is pretty well put together, a warning that we are a society addicted to war, and following the same path of fallen empires with America spearheading the journey.

BBC Four aired this earlier this year I believe, I'm sure you could find the details you wanted on this here link:

Why We Fight (2005) -- Directed by: Eugene Jarecki

jenai can only hope to improve
fact: the majority of hijackers aboard the two flights that hit the world trade center on 911 were Saudis who lived in Germany. Of the rest of the hijackers, there were only two Egyptians.

fact: Egypt was subject to bloodless coup due to the speeches and writing by one man: Sayyid Qutb. The two Muslim organizations implicated in terrorism were formed by founder who had listened to his speeches. His brother went on to speak out about the evils of the West after Sayyid was executed.

fact: the head of state for the Maldives lived in Egypt and was converted to Qutb's version of Wahhabi. Today, the Maldives is run like a Kalifate with the power mainly in the hands of the Muslim leadership. If you are not Muslim, then you may be subject to head tax and other violations of human rights in any Muslim country, including US allies like Pakistan, Malaysia and Indonesia.

fact: Indirectly, both people who invest in oil shares as well as people who drive SUVs and other vehicles funded al Qaeda, which has not been proven to have committed 9-11. Rather, Saudi princes who have been steeped in Qutb rhetoric possibly funded a subset of al Qaeda based in Germany to prepare for the 911 attacks. What I mean by this is no one group is responsible for 9-11, for the whole world depends on oil. And rich Saudi princes who support terrorism grew rich by our need for oil. Thus, the rest of the world shares the responsibility with Saudi Arabia and Egypt for 9-11.

fact: The root cause for terrorism is State oppression as can be seen by the example of the Palestine-Israel conflict where 10 Palestians die for every Israeli. Compared to the Palestinians, Israel is well funded to defend itself, whereas Palestinians had to improvise their arms. Yes, they do buy guns and arms from Iran, but the majority of munitions are hand made. Compared to Israel, the rest of the Middle East consists of ghettos. If you are not from a well respected clan, then you do not share in the wealth of the country, not matter how willing you are to blow yourselves up for return of the Kalifa.

fact: Poverty is the main cause of terrorism, though most terrorism is freedom fighting. This includes the Uighurs of West China, the Burma people, the Tibetans, the Chechens, and even the US social activists who got banned from Canada. Additionally, most anti-war protests are censored in the US now, as is the violent repressions in Moscow, Beijing, and even Florida.
