should school be more geared towards athletics or academics?
I say athletics, by at least an 80 to 20 percent ratio.
edit: talking about elementary to highschool level here double edit: a kid could have this kind of shaping experience in the most formative years of his life or he could have this one Last edited by azazel; Mar 18, 08 at 01:08 AM. |

You keep starting threads that are obviously gonna piss people off, you know people are going to think that education being geared to athletics is a stupid idea. Stop trolling.

So if the whole thing is mostly a character tests, wouldn't team/individual or a mix of both sports be ideal? |

Playing california kick ball just wouldn't do the same. |

sports teaches you focus, self-discipline, hard work, and initiative; a metaphor for how live a successful life. Basically I'm saying school is giving people the fish instead of the fishing lessons ;) |

But by saying 95% of the stuff we learn is useless, shoudln't your analogy be it's like giving us the boot fished up from the bottom of the lake instead of the fishing lessons?

LOL We learn the majority of our knowledge and skill in the first 3 years of our life.
K-12 school isnt necessarily learning facts, its about building work habits, social skills, organization, study skills, problem solving, and being creative etc. Instead your proposing that the provincial government spend millions of tax dollars to school kids for 13 years just to teach them focus, self discipline, hard work, and initiative??? Oh wait the government does fund this... its called the Army! What you seem to miss is the fact that many PE students cant even be bothered to demonstrate one of those skills 3 hours a week. Never mind 80% of their schooling. Last edited by R Wellbelove; Mar 18, 08 at 02:04 AM. |

it seems that sports in a team context would take care of all of that except the part i bolded. :|

I come from a heavy sports background, i think all kids should be enrolled in sports year round. If you see the american schools where football players are only required to play football(free A`s). They are hardly the most open minded intelligent pupils when they hit uni.

Rhia basically nailed it. School is intended to develop and build upon skill sets while giving you a basic understanding of a broad range of knowledge. I personally never attended gym class more than a dozen times and ended up dropping out at 15. I'm now starting to realize I missed out on developing certain skills crucial for learning and understanding more complex theory. I now struggle with a lot of what I am interested in.
So wum, it's important to have a healthy balance of both. Life isn't about one or the other - it's about harmony between mind and body. |

It's a valid question. You're the only one who's pissed off and I can't understand why. Drop the hostility. It's a negative seed.
