I got a e.Digital Treo 15 unit off eBay for $160US and it works great.
15gb of storage, 9 hour Lithium Ion battery, supports playlists, easy to navigate, backlit display and doubles as a portable hard drive. You can upgrade it by buying a 2.5" hard drive, formatting it FAT16 and just drop it into the case. |

just bite the bullet and grab a minidisc player.. you aren't limited to mp3.. and seein how downloading music (unless u pay for it) is on it's way to being outlawed, I'd recommend that. Save up the funds to get one. I have one and it's fantastic for recording live sets.. accepts optical in, and you can hit up over 2 hours on one disc with sony's 2X compression algorithm. Not to mention how durable it is.. it's been dropped contless times and it never misses a beat-- Give it a looksy ;)

Basically decide what you wanna use it for first...there are some that are super-small and great if job or work out, etc...the other type are somewhat larger and meant for what I'd call portability without high impact activity...like going on the bus, hooking into the car stereo, lazing around the beach, etc.
Ultra portable pros are small, super-light, cheaper and usually better on batteries than larger models; main con is the more limited amounts of storage, usually only enought for 1-4 hours of music. The larger types have the advantages of huge storage capacities (10-40GB+), better displays with more room (due to their size)...but they are much more $$$ and tend to hog batteries more, although many are rechargable and so this negates that point somewhat (somewhat because the batteries drain over time and replacements can be pricey). Figure out which type you want first...then decide how much you can spend...that'll likely narrow down the number of models you'll be looking at and make the choice easier. |
