It's not the $12, it's the concept of charging that much to get into a bar. It's just not worth $12 to go to a club, IMO

A lunch is twelve bucks. A movie is twelve bucks. A club night is twelve bucks. (and lasts a lot longer than a movie!..)
Good club nights are offering you a service... I'd prefer to go to kick ass house parties, but they hardly ever happen because they take so much planning and cost and the residences can incur so much damage. Clubs give you the next best thing.
I know I couldn't get a ton of hot girls to come to a certain place and dance and drink. But some clubs can! It's great!
In the end, how much I enjoy club nights is skewed by the fact that I'm a dance-a-holic. If I didn't like to dance so much, there are probably other places I'd go to hang out, because you can't have a decent conversation in one of those places. I have lots of friends who aren't into dancing much, and not surprisingly, they don't go out to clubs as much as I do.
