10 reasons why I love the Lotus.

The Lotus night club is far and away my favorite club in Vancouver. Here are 10 reasons why.

10 - Honey and Milk, the two little bar/club things upstairs from the lotus. While neither of them are anything spectacular, it does mean another bar or two nearby!

9 - The dank. The lotus is a grimy little place.. sounds like a negative? Not in my books. Just means people are more relaxed about getting messy, something many uptight Vancouver clubs could benefit from.

8 - The artwork/visuals. There's freaking art on the columns and stuff! Add lots of soft lighting and comfy couches and you've got the closest thing in Vancouver to an opium den. Minus the opium.

7 - The heat. Closely related to the dank.. when things really get bumpin (as they often do!), it gets hot and sweaty and sticky. Again, cleanliness is next to boringness. Let's get Dirrrty.

6 - The people. I think perhaps in part due to some of the aesthetic qualities I've listed, Lotus draws crowds of non pretentious, fun loving, smiling people who just want to get down. Sounds good to me.

5 - The staff. Bartenders, coat checkers, bouncers.. all professional, friendly and just all around pleasant.

4 - The GIRLS. OK OK so it's related to #6, but this deserves its own special mention. Not only are there often tons of beautiful women at the Lotus, but they're not brain-dead trash.. they've got soul, style, etc. For those guys who frequent the meat markets on Granville street.. If fake, plastic, perfectly sculpted women is what you're looking for, why not just get a mannequin and drill holes in the appropriate places? The conversation would probably be better. I'll take the honeys at the club under Honey over those bimbos any time.

3 - The location. FAR AWAY FROM GRANVILLE STREET. Sketchy (but tasty!) pizza place is located right next door. Tinseltown is across the street. Nice.

2 - The sound system. They don't call it a fucking Sound Lounge for nothing. Far and away the best sound system in Vancouver. Let's face it, if you're looking to spend the night dancing to electronic beats, you want a boomin, bass heavy setup. The Lotus delivers in spades.. If you don't believe me, stand on the sidewalk above the club and, in the words of Marky Mark, feel the vibration!

1 - The nights. For starters, Tuesdays feature Automatic, the longest running drumNbass night in Vancouver.. a night that takes full advantage of the sound system and has brought many a respected international name to town for some organized chaos. Then follow that up with a 3 punch combination of wicked house/prog/tech/break/whatever nights in Thursday's Overproof, Friday's Volume and Saturday's Deepen. What've you got? Good times, that's what.

But yeah, despite its sketchiness, the lotus has been my favorite place to go and get sauced and dance for years. I don't know what it is about that club, but I never feel as comfortable dancing anywhere else. It's dark, nobody cares, the wooden patch where you dance is right by the great soundsystem..it's a great place to go! I've never left big shows there feeling like 'MY EARS OMG MY EARS, THEY'RE BLEEDING' (unlike other clubs which shall remain nameless! ;) )

I love how that one bartender always knows me when I go in, I'll walk by the bar and he'll shake a bottle of bombay at me..it's lovely!

I haven't been in so long, perhaps I'll go with you some weekend Daver.

Yeah, when I went there it was $12 to sit on a wet bar stool, put my over priced drinks on some filthy table with a terry cloth cover and listen to some shitty DJ. $5.00 maybe, but not $12.

I've been to plenty of 10-12 dollar nights that ended up being worth that and far more.

If you picked a night that had a shitty DJ, that's your fault. In the meantime, get a job with a decent wage and stop bitching about 12 measly bucks.

It's not the $12, it's the concept of charging that much to get into a bar. It's just not worth $12 to go to a club, IMO

I totally agree... I remember partying hard with my peeps WAY back when...

Grapes - add Soda's Wednesday night on to your list as well as he has already brought some fo the worlds best Breaks heads to that night.

I am thinking everyone in this thread should come down to the Lotus tomorrow (Wednesday) night as Cinto, Adam, Myself, Soda and Czceh will be throwing down some beats!

the $12 is to cover the cost of people going there high and not buying a single drink.

as far as the 'shitty dj' thing. i have checked out various residents, and out of towners there on most of the different nights there, and i can't remember being disappointed.
