i personally hate when people stereotype all dj's into one category. For example like a mobile wedding dj who's just a walking record player. But I do have respect for top 40 dj's as well since you have to know all your music and be able to get a crowd dancing and keep em dancing. (its not as easy as most might think)
Just knowing how to beatmatch doesnt encompass what dj'ing is to me at all. When I play I do a lot more then just beat match a few records in the last 16 bars of a track. If you're creative with it and can do something more then just "play records" thats when it becomes interesting. Any idiot can beatmatch...for me its what else can do with those two records and whatever else (turntablism, fx, samplers, what have you) to make something unique. Kinda like a conductor for an orchestra, your taking two (or 3 or 4) seperate elements and combining them in your own way making it your own composition. this is what seperates the dj whos a performer, from the dj who's doing all request mondays @ tommy's bar and grill. dig? |
