Volunteer work
does anyone on this board participate with any sort of volunteer work?
I've been looking into the BC Special Olympics and The Autism Society of BC to try and lend any sort of services I can offer to either of these institutions. If you do volunteer with an organization, which one, and to what extent? any info would be appreciated. |

Yeah Jim they need Beaver leaders really badly
they have to turn away a lot kids cause there just aren't enough leaders -- not only that, many Beaver leaders are Moms these days What happened to positive male role models? Are we seriously that busy a society? Anyway - I'm a Spark leader which takes up a few hours a week and i tutor highschool english which takes up another few hours a week If you are around during the daytime - try to get involved with an elementary school - in the Vancouver school district they need all the help they can get, and it's great experience for an educatioal resume later! |

-former Langley Lodge... (Retirement home)
-for the past 3 years i have helped the Ironman -and the Union Gospel Mission.(around christmas) (they're stingy on letting ppl -volunteer..) Here's my advice... you can volunteer just about anywhere that is strapped for cash or just plain cheap... look further into things you <3 there have to be many possibilities... its not all about trying to "Make a difference" its more like person to person... you meet lifetime friends... that care about fellow man... you could talk to your local MP... the Y, Daycares and child groups( cubs, brownies childcare etc. ) usually have strict backround checks but others just need help... what about your local Youth center... kids these days need help... if i only had more time... The two organizations that I mentioned above follow along the lines of something that mean a lot to me. I have been involved in athletics for the better part of my life, the special olympics I think would be a great place to start to help those that don't always have all the opportunities I had growing up to persue the athletic aspects of their lives. As for Autism BC, I have a younger brother who suffers from Pervasive Developmental Disorder, which is a cousin of Autism, and I would really like to take a more active role in supporting it.

I haven't done much volunteer work in the past besides maybe the odd XFM bikini car wash and donations. But now that I am free to do so I plan on doing alot.
I plan on volunteering for the same run as Krista, and this spring/summer I start volunteering at the spca and a battered and neglected horse shelter near white rock I think it is. It's called something like "sunnier days" if anyones interested. I love love animals, but I also love children and would like to help causes related to diseases. I'm also thinking of putting together a group that travels to highschools and talks about social responsibility (ex: racism, bullying, self image etc etc). I also now have Make-up skills at my disposal and want to donate my time to organizations such as The Cinderella Project, and something I heard of that pampers and makes-over women who are, or have suffered from cancer. They get things like a day at the spa, massages, make overs and such. there was actually a Volunteer site that lists all the organizations etc that need help, anyone know the link? |

I volunteered at a soup kitchen called "mission possible" on powell st. for about 2-3 years while I was in highschool.
Definitely was a moving experience, coming out from the upper middle class suburbs to do that...but I met a lot of interesting people and gained a lot of understanding from it. The thing with a lot of downtown shelters and soup kitchens is they are most always run by some kind of religious organization, one of the reasons why I chose "mission possible" was because of the fact that there it is not mandatory to sit through a religious service in order to be served a meal (some soup kitchens and shelters operate in that manner.) I also did volunteer work for my local MP (Libby Davies) which is really great to do around election time if you are really behind your candidate- everything from paperwork, to phonecalls to scruitineering or stuffing envelopes...you can get involved with that by calling your local mps (or mla if you fancy that) office. |
