Plaza Of Nations Can Be Saved With Your Help!
To Whom it May Concern,
I have just read several articles submitted by the Vancouver City Council which states that a city council inquiry for a relocation of the new Vancouver City Casino, could be moved from the Plaza Of Nations, to another locale, if enough public involvement was taken. Such action must state that either A.)Vote Against The Construction of a Casino at 750 Pacific or B.)Vote For Construction Relocation. A growing issue that the city has constantly brought up, is the fact that the down town east side needs a drastic clean up. Well, my thought is that a push for the casino in the downtown eastside, in order to provide (which city sees as a "public attraction") in an area of the city where such attractions are sersiously lacking. I also feel that as a result of this action, that crime will become less and less evident, and more policing of the area (which is a prerequisite for this particular kind of attraction). Hence a productive means of cleaning up the downtown eastside. As for the petition. I am currently in the process of writting up a petition document which I will be exploiting to all sorts people all across the city. So, if you are interested in signing such a petition in support of an "ANTI CASINO @ 750 Pacific" I will see you at Twisted 2004 in the trance room! Cheers guys! As Kelley said, i don't think it will do any good at this point, but i will sign your petition anyway.
As for your idea of moving their construction to the downtown eastside, i doubt that would ever take off the ground. The reasons being that: A) It would cost the city so much more money. At PON they already have a venue built that they can fill will slotmachines and whatever else. They just need to do a little bit of construction to make it more casino friendly. If they moved it to the downtown eastside, they'd have to build an entirely new building, because hell, who wants to have a casino in an old crack hotel. B) What tourists would want to make the trip into that part of vancouver to go to a casino? And I seriously doubt that the city of vancouver would employ more police just for the simple fact of making people feel a tiny bit safer about travelling through this area to go spend their money. C) That area already has enough problems with drugs and crime, they don't need to add gambling problems into their mix as well. I'm not trying to crush your petition dream, but I do think that there are some serious holes in your relocation dream. Nevertheless, like i said before, i will still sign your petition even though the chances of anything changing are pretty much nonexistant. A better idea is too not build this casino at all. Why don't we spend this money on low cost housing, or food shelters...oh wait...that would just make too much sense. Casino...pffft...last thing we need here. |

Ya, I hear ya. I was looking at the amendments which someone raised about additional construction in and around the plaza of nations; from the looks of it, it probably would cost the same amount as just building one from scratch or rebuilding a current site which contains parking, etc. I do agree with your statement that a casino should not even be a priority at all. Its an uncreative and destructive means of generating money. In fact, its not generating money at all. $100 million in casino profits will not be new money, it is a redistribution of money which would otherwise be spent elsewhere, and could potentially take longer for the government to see; adding on to your comment. Plus A.)Gambling is a regressive tax; would be preferable to see direct taxation. B.)Casinos cannibalize money from small businesses C.)The quality of employment offered by casinos is somewhat dubious, and much of the income may be in the form of untaxable tips and D.)In order for the City to realize $12 million in revenue, people must lose $206 million; can the City afford to lose that much in citizen spending; Enough said.

DJ Scratch. Yes I fully agree with you on this one.
When i heard about this casino building idea, i almost puked. This city has so much better ways of spending its money than to build this monster of a thing that takes more money from the city than it gives back. A very important point you made about that. All the money that people are going to be throwing away at this Casino would have been going into other parts of the economy, but instead it's just going to be eaten up by the casino overlords. It makes me angry to think that we have education funding cuts, medical funding cuts, homelessness and all that jazz and yet our government still has the balls to do things like build casinos and host the olympics (which as cool as the olympics are going to be, we could use the money somewhere else) Oh..and Fluff E Kitty: Petitions hardly ever work. Especially when they're by a bunch of raver kids that the general public tend to look at as just drugged out children who listen to repetitive electronic music. I wish the petition would change something, but i don't think it will. |

Well something people aren't considering ... have you looked at the casino plans? They're keeping a lot of the large areas open for entertainment purposes ( I read in georgia straight awhile ago I think ) , so there still could potentially be parties there.

Casinos make far to much money for the city to even care about a petition ... Turning plaza into a casino will make it a fairly large one that will have guaranteed profits, as all casinos do... have any of your heard of a casino that actually lost money ? I havent....
