^i've got a coffee grinder, coffee pot *drip*, and the best coffee in the world.
Once you have good coffee, you never go back. I find the problem with blendz and starbucks is they don't give a thurough cleaning with all the equipment. They wash out the pots and everything every night but going through that much coffee in a day causes such a buildup of crap. you can literally see oily residue crap on the top of each cup, of their drip coffee anyway. I also got a beef with how shitty they treat their employees, wages, business ethics, etc etc but that's a different drunken rant altogether. Go outside the lower mainland to any smaller community. bet you 10:1 you won't be paying more than $3/cup, including mocha, cappucino etc |

Your experience just reflects the fact that some managers look to details when it comes to first impression, and expect more than other managers might. When you're applying for a positon which involves dealing with customers (especally on such as starbucks) first impressions DO count because it reflects how you might perform (and be received by customers) as a potential employee. If you gave off a bad impression to the manager when applying to the company, what purpose would she have in hiring you? If you want to increase your chances of getting an interivew/job then go the extra mile. Cover as many of the expectations that managers may be looking for. When applying for (low-paying) positions I still dress up (to an extent), and I still make the effort to speak personally to the manager and call in advance to get his/her name and figure out when he/she will be in next so that I can introduce myself. if the company is hiring, that's the fastest/easiest way to get an interview. In doing so, I have never had to look for a job over a week's time. Also, consider that if a company is hiring, then there are dozens of people applying every day for that exact position you are applying for. i remember when I worked for aritzia we'd have about 10 girls per day with various qualifications applying for a position. some of them completed their degrees in marketing, biology, what not... (i peeked at their resumes) but were not even offered an interview because they didn't leave any impression on the manager. Last edited by yoko*; Jun 16, 04 at 03:48 PM. |

Hey
My brother and i argued at length over this topic. When applying for a job, ALWAYS look as if you're ready to walk onto the job. (i.e. -Dress nice!) In a perfect world, nobody's judged on their chioce of attire, but in reality, that starbucks guy was doing you a favor by telling you what people in a position to grant employment look for. Greg |

When I drop of resumes & when coming back for the interview, I dress like I would while working at the job. Gives a good impression on my appearance both times. |

Wow... Well ive jsut worked a year at Second Cup *proud*
Jake: we get the "grende, tall, caramel machetto, fropochino things?" ALLL THE FREIKEN TIME!!! Usualy I just kinda laugh *with* the customer and help adjust and remind them where not in starbucks. They'er usualy very umbarast. But then it gives us a chance to help explain our drinks and how much better they are or up sell... "ok so tall as in this size" *shows large cup* becuase a tall cup should not be a regular or small in my discription opinioun!?! I could go on and on why I HATE starbucks. Their service=shit their burnt coffee=shit and there prices are over the top and even after I asked for skim milk... the cunt still served me a steamer made out of there always use HOMO milk EWWW!!! I was already on the sea bus by time I realized... otherwise I jsut may go back and be a pain :P Courtney: No matter what... if aplying, interview, or just dropping somthing off... if your in the proccess of getting hired BE PRESENTABLE. And make it look like you really care about the job. Even myself has scribled mean comments on aplications with those who are snobby, show up wtih friends, are on the cell phone, and jsut show me they probly have a carless attitude that I dotn want to have to wrok with maybe one day in the future. You have to empress all the workers cus we have a huge say too. Because in our mind we will be working with you. Again it may have nothing to do with you? I got really up set because my manager was telling us to look for ppl. We were pissed off becuse we were already lacking shifts, why hire someone else? So I didnt care or try with any of the ppl who appliyed that week. Otherwise best of luck!!! There are lots of starbucks and coffee places around =) Last edited by Ree Fresh; Jun 17, 04 at 02:18 AM. |

I know that enough people have said this by now, but being someone that used to be in charge of looking over resumes and hiring, I dont care what the job is, when I go in to even drop off resumes I make sure I'm looking my best. First impressions mean everything.
If i'd been the manager and came in applying for a job in blue jeans and a t-shirt, your resume would have to be absolutely amazing for me to want to hire you. To me, it all comes down to how bad do you want the job. Sure Starbucks might not be your dream job, but at least it's a job which is more than you got right now. Sounds harsh, but it's the truth. |
