Having gone to many hippie raves in Smithers, I can say that, yes, there are some aspects of these two counter-cultures that are similar; mainly the dancing-all-night-under-the-stars-while-under-the-influence-of-halucinogens-and-engaging-in-pseudo-philisophical-debates aspect.
However, whatever counter-cultural movement raves may have had in the late 80's/early 90's was lost as it grew in popularity and became a commercialized enterprise sponsered by the superclubs. For the most part you'll only find that atmosphere in the very most underground parties or small towns that don't have enough of a following to grow into a commercial enterprise. My $0.02:
Hippy: Person who does not pull their weight to help sustain the flow of, or help advance society. Will leach off of thoes who earn their keep and work for a living. Will also complain about the government more then the average person, and has a bunch of poorly backed up theories about sociology. |

Good Lord,,, because you once went to some main streamrave "back in the day" does not mean you've even really had a good look at the scene. I've been to parties that I'm 2-3 years younger then most of the people there. |

Yea ravers are like hippies,,, the kids from the past 2-4 years are not ravers. They are consumers of product, haggings on, Johnny-come lates. Heck when I started to party there was no 16 year olds, there was not many 17year olds ether.
When I started there was people from all walks of life, getting a long, accepting each other for who they where. Non of this high school judgment type shit. People knew the order of respect. Now I have kids trying to tell me I'm the one that has no place Heck NO! that totally voids the point of the raves in the first place, so really they are the ones that don't belong. There is still parts of the scene true to the old school values of the rave. People actually "RAVE" they rave like there's no fucking tomorrow. They rave like there's no fucking now. They rave like there was no yesterday even. They actually rave. Not mill about in some concert of no talent non-artist, holding on to the type bull shit that's killing the world around us. Just as the early hippies are the ones that set the movement, the ones that fallowed where the hanger ons that where useless druggies. And to some degree this is the way the rave scene worked out. So any one that states that ravers only cause was about legalizing parties, those people MISSED THE FUCKING BOAT. They did not take in the real social aspect of parties. acceptance of one and an other. Yes this post might seam hypocritical, but I find it hard to accept, nonacceptances. I judge the actions of the whole, not the individual people. Last edited by Crazy Dave; Aug 19, 04 at 12:55 AM. |
