Big Brother/1984.....

Has anyone read the book 1984 by George Orwell??? If so whut did u think of it?

I just finished reading it and wow....it's amazing...
It gets me wondering if there really is a "big brother" in our society and if we're being watched all the time. Already there's cameras pretty much everywhere!!! And nanny cams, telescreens, tracking devices...the possibilites are endless and who's to know for sure that the government isn't tracking our every move.

For those who haven't read the book.....go read it!! Right now! :169:

Great book, the "chess game" ending is phenomenal. Did you know he picked the tittle by taking 1948 and reversing the last 2 numbers?

I also suggest you look for "animal farm" another great book he wrote. Very different setting, but an interesting and dark satire of the communist regime of that time. Essential reading.

Both books were made into movies too, 1984 was a live actor film, and animal farm was remarkable animation. Also recommended.

Cheers.

I read it in my grad year! At first I really didn't want to read it as I hate stuff to do with the government. However, I really got into it and it was a rude awakening to how similar that book is to society now. You ask if there is a big brother in our society...well if you really think about it, there is something similar. As the government is already taking steps to track our every move, we're all on file somewhere, taxes, the list could go on. If you really sit down and think about it, our society is taking a step in that direction. Kind of scary!

Animal Farm is even crazier... the entire book is like a metaphor for communism or something... I can't remember now. haven't read it in a long time.

I didn't really like the end of 1984.. when he goes nuts and conforms... frankly it scared me.

Animal Farm, I found wasn't as good as 1984! But you're right it is a metaphor...had to write a huge final exam essay on it! *eep*

Have you seen 1984 the movie? The ending is pretty freaky...

I liked 1984. I liked Brave New World too. All those cliched dystopias. Haven't read either of those for a few years though...

Oh, and Animal Farm isn't exactly a metaphor, it's an allegory.
