despite the amount of mountains we have in our area, there a very few (if not, no companies at all) companies around here that are willing to take beginners ice climbing. ice climbing is hands down the most dangerous style of climbing out there. for most companies, ice climbing is seen as more of a liability then a money maker. there are way too many uncertanties and risks when it comes to outdoor ice climbing, not to mention insurance to take beginners outdoor climbing is over 20,000$ a year. at the climbing gym i used to work at, we tried to setup a ice climbing program but again the insurance costs were too high.
once and a while, some local companies will create a ice stack on the side of grain silo or a building, and generally they will charge around 50$ an hour which includes instruction, equipment ect... otherwise, your best bet is to look into some companies in the kootenays/alberta region. if you have any other questions, hit me up on my msn. |
