what da fuck was the guy blabbering about? At one point he said, "you want to make sure that when you are vinyl shopping, you pick up singles, not albums!"

i guess if its a single the track spread entirely onto a side, instead of sharing the side with 4+ other tracks... making it simpler to drop the needle on the beginning of the track and also making it easier to see where breakdowns are

that's really the only reason i can think of

the most important reason is sound quality.
compare a brand new 12" single to a 5 cut on each side album.
the 12" will be probably 25% louder.

also 12" are very useful for hip hop djs, as they usually have the accapella and/or the instrumental.

as many hip hop tracks dont have a mixable intro you have to get 2 copies to make a succesful transition.

of course if you're a trance dj you probably wouldnt know all that.

Hmm your probly right as going over the basics and the teaching the whole concept of dj'ing is a bit basic and duh...

However if your getting into scratching and all that dmc stuff I learned alot from some of those video's. Its really inspiring and gives you alot more modivation too :D

It's a sound quality issue, it has nothing to do with finding the breakdowns.

When you have multiple tracks per side it means that the grooves have to be thiner and closer together. This means that the record cannot be pressed as loud because there is less room for the grooves and since low frequencies take more space on the disc than mid- and high frequencies (see pic), they will fill the disc sooner, i.e reducing the available playing time at the choosen level or forcing the cutting engineer to reduce the level to fit the track(s) on the side of the disc. Thin and closer together grooves also increase the chances of the needle skipping. With drum and bass the bass freqs are especially heavy.. the bass vibrations can cause the needle to skip out of the groove if they are cut to close together.. so its good to have the room to cut grooves further apart.. this helps the needle stay in check..

From left to right 100 Hz, 500 Hz, 3000 Hz.

I hear RONCO on the home shopping network made a great "How to be a DJ" learning video. Check it out, if you buy within the next 30 minutes, he will throw in not one, but two decks.

i got shitloads of hip hop LPs. Sound Quality isnt as loud but thats where a good mixer w/ strong sound controls will cover that void.

But ya singles are the way to go.
