^sharing a laugh with someone because of cultural/language differences is a little different than making them feel stupid and laughing at their expense.
if he thought it was funny and was laughing along with you that would be different. instead, you describe him as if he was frantic and uncomprehending of what was going on. that ISN'T funny. that just makes you an asshole.

In all honesty, I don't think that you have ever worked in an environment where the majority of your customers don't speak your language....you get really bored, I mean...you don't hold a conversation of more than two words for eight hours a day with anyone. So when you get someone who is extra obnoxious......hence....a man that pokes the glass and looks at you sideways bringing a noise from deep within his chest to say uh....uh! Like what the fuck.....that shit doesn't sound like any language....does this guy think I'm a fucking monkey? Obviously, this is Oakridge mall...and yeah....I do alot of customer service tending to people that cannot communicate and in fact I'm am the most helpful sales rep in any of the stores I've worked in. If there are no translators my co-workers would send them to me because I'm patient :) But I have no patience for demanding assholes that treat me like I'm some kind of telepathic monkey translator :P

its the people that english is their first language and they still havent mastered it.. its a really good thing i dont deal with people face to face .... sometimes i just put them hold and laugh there was a guy today that sounded like he had 50 marshmallows in his mouth..

first off, lou_belle, although they may have told you you were fired for not knowing a second language, the real reason, and they wre just too nice to say it is that no one liked you.
the second thing is, did the guy say anything in any language to you at all? maybe it wasn't that he couldn't speak english, maybe he can't speak at all....maybe he's had a brain injury, maybe he's slightly retarded, regardless, picking on "tards" should have been something you grew out of in elementary school. stop being such a mean bitch, why do you hate yourself so?

hahaaa.. reminds me of something funny. i once worked an ice cream stand as well and this guy (also no english) was panto-miming what he wanted with scooping actions and everything and it literally looked like he was asking for a hand job.

While it sucks that he couldn't communicate with you, it was super mean to fuck with the guy. I agree that he's lazy if it's true that he just didn't CARE to learn yes or no, but like someone mentioned, he could have been mentally challenged and unable to learn :(

Threads like this get me all revved up... I work with children with special needs, and have worked with adults who have developmental disabilities. I Have a very different persepctive on aquiring and using "language" because of that.
If I ever see anyone disrespecting someone in the same fashion that you did, or worse... I lay right into em on the spot. If I hear about people disrespecting people who have difficulty aquring and using language (for whatever reason), I lay into them as well. Looks like everyone else is giving you a hard time, which is deserved, so I don't really need to jump on the boat late. But wow... Having a good laugh at someone else's expense is never cool. I work really hard with young children who are learning to use language instead of aggressive beahviours (which is their only current language). I also have learned sign language and how to use Pic Syms to help in visual aids in communication and to communicate with those who are hearing impared or deaf. I understand how hard it is to teach language. I was fortunate enough to have the dominant canadian language as my first language, but I don't feel myself to be any better than someone who doesn't have English as their first language. And frustrating as it is, I will work at great length and compassion to understand what someone is making an effort to communicate to me, in vocalizations, hand gestures, signs and other behaviours is necessary.
