Speak English or Else I'll....
"Sir...Can I help you?"
"Uh....uh.............uh!" He taps on the glass. "You want ice cream? How many scoops would you like?" "Uh! Uh!........uh." He points on the glass above the vanilla. "You want chocolate?" I start making his cone."Scrumdidilee-umptious....I love chocolate." "UH!....UH!.....UH!" He waves no, and stabs the glass above the vanilla. "Oh.....sorry," I clean off the scoop and start scooping again,"you wanted maNGO....yes, yes....mango is another good one....mmmm?...mM!" "UH!UH!UH!UH!" just freakin' now. "Oh, sorry...which one ARE you pointing to?.....the mint?" I scoop up a ball of mint ice cream and hold it looking at his face curiously. "Hrmmm....well? This isn't it? You want pecan?" I scoop a ball of that too. "UH!......uh.....uh!" The tip of his finger is swelling and white. "Oh....my god, sorry! HAha...I thought you were pointing to the pecan...but it is so obviously rainbow that you want! Tt*sorry." "Nuh...nuh..uh!" I ask once more, "This one??" "Nuh.....uh nuh." "OH! Gosh, this whole time you wanted vanilla? Heh..well jeez....that was simple enough? Golly.....I love vanilla the most!" MuahhHEHEhehheheHAh~ |

That's funny though. When I worked at Off the Wall, there were ALWAYS people who wanted help but couldn't speak a word of English or French. It was sooo frustrating, and one of them finally was able to communicate with one of the staff members that spoke her language, and she called me stupid for not knowing what she wanted! GAH! |

I think they did and were showcasing their ability to be a dink.
Maybe I'm fucked, but I enjoy the challenge of trying to communicate with someone that doesn't speak my language. Rewarding once you get it, and you avoid belittling someone because *gasp* they're not like you!! |

^agreed.
wow... that was a really terrible thing to do, especially if you knew exactly what they wanted to begin with. Would you want that done to you if you travelled elsewhere? Laughing at people for their "disabilities" = uncool. |

the language barrier in richmond is really difficult. i question why some ppl who can't speak a word of english would come into a mainstream WHITE FOOD restaurant. i had to walk the lady through the menu yesterday and it was still difficult cuz she spoke mandarin while i am only fluent in cantonese (its kinda like french/english..some words are just a lil off) but i went through each dish with her and in the end shes like "CLAM CHOWDER" ughhhh.. after all the explaining on teh steaks, brisket, and salmon she goes and says clam chowder in english. it was a hoot. but i dont understand.. at elast bring a friend who can speak a liil more. difficult situation.

like dave said, communicating with someone when you speak different languages can be frustrating, but also a rewarding experience.
it's a good thing to remember that there ARE different languages and cultures and religions and people living in our country. taking advantage of someone and degrading them simply because they speak a different language is extremely cruel. it's not like their intelligence is different than yours. well in lou_belle's case i would say intelligence is a large factor, but mainly because she doesn't seem to have any. |
