Today's Vancouver Province

special section, B1

photo: girls dancing in mesh, photoshopped glowsticks all around them.

title: METH MADNESS

subtitle: DEADL MIX: Police say crystal meth, linked to the deaths of 33 people in B.C. last year, has been found mixed in ecstacy pills commonly taken by ravers.

Skimming through the article, there is hardly a mention of "raves" anywhere, except that it appeared in the scene 15 years ago. (quoted from article).

Cliff notes:
province article states obvious, media hypes raves again without actually having substance ABOUT raves in the article.

yes, but article coverpage seems to instill raves as being the catalyst to the meth craze.....i don't know, it's like an essay with a thesis, followed by pages of junk which don't support it.

i think if i was doing the article i'd be choosing between a picture of kids at a rave or kids on the street in a backalley. i guess they chose the rave photo to try and "glamorize" it.

i havent read the article but is it on crystal meth, or just methamphetamines in general? cause if its just on meth in general, ecstacy falls into that category and i think realisticly you really only see it being done at "electronic music functions" (with the rare occasion of it being elsewhere).

ecstacy itself is HUGE with high school kids these days, it's freaky. (at least out here in the sticks).

and johnny illbeans, it was solely on speed.

Exactly.

Having been one of the people interviewed, I was interested to see what they did with it. I believe it was for The Sun, not The Province. But I may have gotten that twisted, seeing as how there was loud music and such.

Oh well.

About a year ago the public schools started to realized that there was a huge up rise in students doing meth calling it a "new drug". There all panicing and aware of it, but dont link it to raves at all.

Hahahaha. Well, since when can we trust the newspapers for completely unbiased news? It's all about the money to them. All newspapers are owned by major corporations seekins a profit.

Articles like these will be eaten up by the public.

The newspaper can be very biased, don't trust everything you read. They are just trying to make raves look bad, its the same old song and dance.

I was thinking about getting into journalism, but it's sensationalist attention grabbers like this that make me think twice.

Journalism can be a noble job. But you have to remember most of the news people see go through filters. Also, most of the world's news is owned by major corporations. Some journalists have been fired for writing something that criticizes the corporations they work for. I guess you have to sacrifice some integrity. **side note: I meant to type integrity but typed intelligence instead.. Freudian slip?** Also, celebrity journalists make me sick.

haha I love it.

Apparently there is no longer a heroin epidemic to worry about ( because these thirty some odd people that died from meth use as cited on the paper's front page apparently don't die ten fold in this city from overdoses or related diseases like contracting HIV from infected needles in a day/week/year)

The province is traaash anyways.
