city VS town

I need to settle a debate!

What are the population parameters for making up a 'town' and a 'city'?

I'm fighting with this dude from new zealand that considers Victoria a town. sha!

If I'm not mistaken 100,000 = city.

I could be wrong but I remember hearing this at one time or another.

Victoria is no town that's for sure... It is the CITY of Victoria.

What is the difference between a city and a town?
In the United States, an incorporated city is a legally defined government entity, with powers delegated by the state and county and created and approved by the voters of the city. It can provide local government services to its citizens.

In most places in the U.S. a town, village, community, or neighborhood is simply an unincorporated community with no governmental powers. Usually, county governments provide services to these unincorporated communities. Some states do have official designations of "towns" that include limited powers.

Generally in the urban heirarchy, villages are smaller than towns and towns are smaller than cities but each country has its own definition of a city and an urban area.

point being? Tis not the size of a place that a city doth make.

Not only is Victoria a city, it is the capital city. Governments can designate "city" status however they wish.

yeah, i never really understood the "Corporation of Delta" thing... Aldergrove is nothing FYI, just part of Langley. Anmore is a village and so is Belcarra.

Maple Ridge is only a Municipality, PoCo's just a stupid town (and how!)

And one city I left again to the shagrin of some: good ol' Richmond

actually im pretty sure 15 000 is the min for a place to be called a city,
my town fort nelson has around 5k people its a town
fort st john next town down the road has 17k its a city

It's funny because Fort Nelson is too small for a MacDonalds but has a Subway.

A freakin' Boston Pizza? lol I think MacDonalds just won't go there because they'd have to pay more than people on the Patch make so that people would apply to work there.

Cranbrook is an odd little town... kinda like Trail or Castlegar.

a little judgemental? i think i might have passed throught it one time and not noticed. I know Comox is still called a town but it has a fair amount of people, i don't know the exact number tho.

Chilliwack recently became an "city". I think they said the dividing line was about 50,000. Population here is about 80,000 including nearby farms etc.

But the real thing they look at is if there is a Starbucks. We have 2.

Actually I didn't forget about Mission at all, in fact I will never for the rest of my life have the pleasure of forgetting about Mission! I was going to include Mission (Municipality and District), but then decided I shouldn't bring down the good name of places like Aldergrove or PoCo by including Mission in the same post.

I think it doesn't matter, village, city or town, everybody always ends up to know everything .The longer it takes to know about it depends on how big the networks are(obviously, city has more networks and people than a town and many more than a village. In that line of thoughts, i believe that Vancouver could be classified as an urban village as you usually get to know everything, weither you like it or not.
