famous = rich + paparazzi
rich = rich + maybe a bit of paparazzi unless you are like Bill Gates rich I would rather be rich, being a star is a hard work, same goes to rich, both requires to work hard, unless you win lottery or something, but that doesn't happen to everyone. |

i think people are looking over the fact here that just because you are famous, doesn't mean that everyone knows who you are. let me explain:
i would say John Grisham is a fairly famous writer, but i would have no idea if i passed him on the street or not, and i doubt most people really knows what he looks like enough to catch him on the street if he was walking by. |

my definition is that if people hear your name it means something to them. if people hear Shakespeares name they remember that he wrote a bunch of plays and it means something to them. i'm not saying that rich doesn't come with fame a lot of the time...but what i was saying was that i would rather be famous for being a great writer...even if my books didn't make a ton of money. there are a lot of writers that write one great novel that doesn't make them rich. but they are remembered for that novel and that makes them famous. even serial killers can be famous. ted bundy, jack the ripper...these are all famous people. famous doesn't mean that you went on a movie screen or are on TV a lot. it just means that your name and your life has significance to a wide number of people. |

it IS possible to become famous and have no one know what you look like. |

Jake, I see what you mean. But if you're famous because of your work, and no one knew what you look like, wouldn't you say that your work is famous and not yourself?
Shakespeare isn't famous because of him being Shakespeare, it was his works that made the name so well known. You could say movie stars and celebrities are famous because of their films or music, but there's a certain point where their talent becomes overshadowed by their fame, and they basically make a living on their fame alone. There's Britney Spears, she has pretty much NO singing talent, but she still sells records, and she can make money through endorsements because of her fame. I guess what I'm trying to say is there's a difference between your work/what you've done making your name known; and you, as a person being famous. And the latter is what most people immediately think of when they hear the word 'fame.' I'm not sure how to explain this better. Last edited by acidic_liquid; Feb 23, 05 at 03:57 PM. |

^i see your point...sort of.
but let's say i write a book called "Boogers for Dinner" and it becomes really really famous and they study it in schools and in universities and there's a movie made out of it and people write term papers about it. now, yes, the WORK itself would be famous...but since i wrote the work, i would be made famous by my work. no one would be able to print the book, or write a paper on it, or make a movie out of it, without mentioning the actual writer. which is exactly the kind of fame i want; i don't want the glamour fame of movie stars...i want the gritty fame of an artist that is famous for what he does and not just his face. movie stars usually keep themselves in the spotlight to boost their careers...but there are some movie stars that are famous without really being famous. johnny depp for instance, lives a relatively quiet life (in europe, i beleive), doesn't do that many talk-show circuits or interviews and therefore doesn't appear in the tabloids as much. there are different levels of fame. maybe the original question of rich or fame should be clarified. |

monday on the bus, i was going to the skytrain station downtown and i saw this guy working for Amnesty International (you know the guys. the ones that stand on a street holding their clipboards, looking pathetic asking if you have time for amnesty. no. NO I NEVER HAVE TIME) anyway, i saw this guy, and he picked his nose and then looked at his finger and THEN HE ATE IT. he was standing right in the middle of a busy downtown street and he pulled the 'pick and chew'. like i'm going to want to shake that guys hand and talk to him about political prisoners. i just saw him eat his own snot. |

There was this cute guy in my class and two of my friends saw him pick his nose and stick it in his mouth, right in the middle of the lecture! Now everytime I look at him, I picture him eating his own boog :( |
