Increased Gambling in vancouver..
I'm working on a paper to do with the rise of gambling in Vancouver and am looking for some feed back from you guys....
Question one: with the NHL lock out this last year, are you (or the people around you) gambling more? any comments? Last edited by soma; Mar 28, 05 at 03:16 PM. |

TOTALLY.
the guys in my fraternity started playing poker like everynight and they never did that when hockey was on. of course, that might have had something to do with new guys coming into the house that played more poker, but i'm not sure. plus, i've seen lots of texas holdem posters advertising tournaments around UBC lately and i didn't see many of those last year, either. |

If it wasn't for the world poker tour that airs on tv then you wouldn't see as many people playing poker. I know a whole bunch of people who just play plain texas hold'em and thats the only one they know how to play. The second I ask them if they wanna play some omaha poker or 7-stake they look at me like I don't know what I am talking about. And because of that they'll risk anything on a game to which they honestly don't know where the boundaries of playing are. Instantly When they get A-A they think they have the mother of all hands when really they don't and they'll go all in on it. I've played texas hold'em and had A-A before and had to fold just on the flop. You can't never ever raise or go all in with those cars before the flop, and if you do its either because your inexperienced or your going for the risk. A smart poker player plays there cards and doesn't get greedy.

Well slots is really a no brainer. Those things are what really brings in the money for the casino. Tables don't generate as much revenue then the slots do. If I stole alot of money and needed to get rid of it fast somehow I'd play slots non stop cause I know that chances are almost next to nothing.

I totally think so.
It seems like almost every guy I know is pretty poker obesessed right now, and these are people I'd usually see religiously following hockey. Maybe it's a coincidence this trend came along when it did in a big way, but I am sure that if they had other things to focus on, they wouldn't be playing as much. |

various combinations of poker being huge right now, lack of hockey and the fact that it seems like a new casino opens up every 3 months.
maybe everyone just has a little bit more disposable income? it's a decent excuse to get a few people together and sit around for a while. something that hockey used to do. |

having worked at the racetrack (hastings park) for a while i saw alot of people with gambling addicitons.
certain people whom i know make crap loads of money from either galloping or as trainers always had no cash and lived on a shoe string budget yet they weren't the party type nor were they drug useers. eventualy i found out that those people had serious gambling addictions. it was sad, i saw only one who managed to stop. go tony! |

this is kind of unrelated...but...if it wasnt for this whole trend of poker, i'd be out of a lot of money. I work at a sports bar which would be packed full for every hockey game. tons of booze and tons of fun. which means tons of money for the one behind the bar. since there is no hockey, my bosses (as well as everyone else) have jumped on this poker wagon. They brought in the team 1040 poker series on thursdays which is always packed. You don't win any money but you get entered to win trips and such. Once again...it's packed. The shitty thing is about 70% of these poker players don't drink. They are just there for the all in. Another thing that has brought alot of people into the bars in NTN Texas Holdem. Its free and fun. And fills the space of what sport to watch tv. (It also makes my day faster when i play poker all day) So in conclusion (heh) as long as my bar is full and they keep throwing $ at me...im fine with poker instead of hockey now. Hell...Baseball has started so let the good time begin.
p.s. hey brett...im sorry but i can't be friends with yankee fans. :) |
