Glastonbury set for 'silent disco'
LONDON, England (Reuters) -- Britain's Glastonbury music festival will feature a "silent disco" this year in an effort to sidestep a noise curfew, festival organizer Michael Eavis said on Tuesday.
Instead of DJs blasting their sounds through speakers, thousands of revelers partying past midnight at the open-air music event will be given wire-free headphones with volume controls that directly tune in to a stereo system. "It's a unique way for people to party without offending those who want to sleep or disturbing the villagers nearby, who have complained about the noise," said Eavis, who founded the festival in 1970 on his farm in western England. "We've been looking at a solution like this for ages ... The system was developed by a Dutch firm and successfully used at parties in the Netherlands and we hope it works here too," he told Reuters. The idea is one of several introduced in recent years to improve relations with local villagers. A giant "super-fence" was erected around the site in 2002 to cut down on crime and foil gatecrashers. Glastonbury, an annual three-day festival famous for its mud and mayhem, has attracted some of the biggest names in music over the years, including REM, Radiohead and James Brown. But Eavis wouldn't spill the beans on who would headline this year's event, scheduled for June 24-26. SNAP that'd be TIGHHHHTTT. I don't really think it would be that quiet though... just because the speakers are bumping sound, doesn't mean that people stomping on the floor isn't loud in itself...
it would hardly be silent... but it would still be cool.

THE MUSIC would be in the headphones....
i'm talking about the PEOPLE... the PEOPLE themselves will make noise just by moving around, and DANCING... i.e. pounding their feet on the floor, just because the PEOPLE can't hear themselves because the headphones, doesn't mean OTHER people without them can't hear the people. u kno?

But come on man!!! Who wants to party wearing headphones?!? How can you talk to your friends?! How do you change rooms? How do they stop you from jacking their shit? Or what happens if a ton of them get broken?!?!!?

yeah, i already saw a paot on this, but my oppinion is still the same.
it is an inyteresting concept, but not a very good one. parties would suck without the pounding music, and being able to talk to friends....having head phones would suck :(

well dude, (firewire) the whole point MAY BE loud music... but it sounds like the options are, CLOSE IT DOWN AT MIDNIGHT (people would be like WHAT THE FUCK... they'rd be riots...) OR... USE HEADPHONES....
if ur goin ta a huge rave, n paying a pretty cent to get in, wouldn't YOU want it to last past midnight?
