Stomach Survivor

Well last night I was rather hungry so I looked in my trusty ol' Fridge in my Room for something to fill that void. After narrowing my options down to more Hot Dogs or the non-descript white Styrofoam Container in the corner in the back. I chose that. Opening it I found Sweet and Sour Pork and Rice. Then I had to wrack my Brain to remember when I last had Chinese Food. Hmm... one would think that it's a bad sign. I smelled it... so far so good. But then I'm still wondering how old it is. I think it might have been a month old. Oh well... tossed the sucker in the Microwave on Hiroshima for 4 minutes. That'll kill anything alive in it. Turns out... I'M ALIVE! YAH! And it even tasted good. Anyone have a similar culinary adventure?

Haha. Thats gross!! I never eat anything 'old'.

I consider the following 'old' after the following days

Bread - 3 days
Milk - 1 week before expired
Takeout/left overs - Over 24 hours
Cheese - 1 week
Meat - 2 days
Crackers - 2 weeks
Cereal - 2 weeks
Fruit - 5 days (with the exception of apples and oranges.. those suckers are good for a few weeks)

..thats basically my mind frame.. I am constantly throwing 'old' food out! My roomate gets annoyed..but if I dont do it.. it will ROT.

Heh, you should probably rethink some of those...

Fresh bakery bread, yes. Storebought has at least a week, Wonder Bread pretty much lasts a month.

That's a bit harsh! Even organic milk lasts at least to the 'best before' date, and regular storebought milk, the cows are so full of antibiotics and growth hormones, it's usually at least another week after!

Ok, here I agree. Especially sushi - a friend once offered his friend, visiting from Japan, leftover sushi that had been in the fridge for four or five hours. The guest was *horrified* - apparently that's JUST NOT DONE over there.

See above, re: hormones, antibiotics, etc. If you go to a butcher shop, you want the darker cuts of meat, because those are the cuts that have been aged more - good steak is aged 30 days!

Now this is a little ridiculous - dry goods, stored in a cool, dry place, last *years*. What are crackers and cereals made of? Grains. (and rice, in the case of Rice Crispies and the like). What do they do with grain when they harvest it? Store it in a silo until it's needed - months, if need be.

Yeah, I agree here - especially bananas, once those go bad, you *know* it.

I'm all for mass-fading leftovers that I can't remember when the actual meal was, but seriously, don't throw money away!

You're the exact opposite of my mom, Lauryn. She doesn't want anything to go to waste, so she'll just keep things in the fridge. Even if it'd way past its best before date, and no one will ever touch it. She thinks the fridge is magical and food will never rot if kept there.

I throw out food when she's not around :)

I've had bad experiences with misc. leftover chinese food, never again! But pizza on the other hand, you can just throw that under your pillow and eat it in the morning no prob.

well its BEST before, so technically it could still be in GOOD condition afterwards

i usually try not to waste food. even if its kinda old, i give it an observation test, sniff test and a soggy area test... then a mini taste test, and if its all good i dive in
