wow, i didn't know you were going so soon!
i've kind of planned my itinerary, but the thailand portion is difficult because there's so so much to see. thus far it's shaping up a little like this: thailand: four+ weeks (depends when we get our flight, hehe) fly to bangkok, meet up with my gf there. fourish days. two weeks to travel south, depending on time either go to the beaches around trang and krabi and then cross the coast to ko samui and ko phangan for the full moon party on sept 18, or vice versa. back to bangkok. see ayutthaya, and either spend a couple weeks touring the north or the east. make it to cambodia. cambodia: week and a half siem reap/angkor for a week few days in phnom penh, then to vietnam vietnam: two weeks travel along the mekong, make our way to ho chi minh city. up to hue, stopping wherever. up to hanoi, then meander around the north, esp stoked about checking out halong bay. fly from hanoi to kathmandu. nepal: week and a half few days in kathmandu and environs, then a trek. probably annapurna.. but we'll decide there based on available tours (not going unguided, scared :S) and recommendations from travellers. fly to delhi india: four+ weeks from delhi make our way to pushkur, for the huge camel festival november 8th. continue touring around rajasthan, stopping in jaipur (where we'll go on camel safaris!)and jaisalmer. go to agra to see the taj mahal. go to delhi, fly from delhi to kerala or mysore, whichever is cheaper. tour the kerala region, taking the backwater cruises up north. spend some time in goa, maybe going to a full moon rave. and then depending on my level of homesickness/the weather in spain/how i feel at the time.. i'll either stay in the region (maybe work at a guesthouse/hostel in thailand, or see about finding a volunteer position in india or thailand that'll pay for my room & board), fly home for a few months, go with my gf to her family in poland, or go directly to spain where i'm learning spanish in barcelona for a few months. the world is so exciting. cambodia: |

man......i want to see india so bad, but im not down with going there myself right now. that can be the next trip in a couple of years.
as far as south thailand is concerned, i say skip krabi and go to koh lanta. it hasnt been nailed that badly by tourism, and is pretty cheap compared to Krabi(which is popular as shit with luggage on wheels types). i saw maybe 10 other whities during my 6 days on the island, and the locals are very helpful and kind. its close to, maybe 3 or4 hours away from krabi. just an idea. i might make my way to koh phagnan again to party hearty on the island for a night then take off in the am for koh tao. i had a lot of fun on koh tao and recommend it(if you are interested in diving...or the best of everything on one neat little island.) i took today off becuase i am sick, and have spent the last 4 hours or so researching my trip! if you havent found it already www.lonelyplanet.com is your new best friend. oh i love lonelyplanet online! i spent all day reading the guidebooks i got from the library the other day.
i'm kind of scared about going to india, especially since i'm going with another young, relatively attractive girl. we're also both tall, thin, and fair, so i'm sure we'll be harassed somewhat... but i'm obsessed with indian culture and have been forever (my fave books and authors are indian, my fave food is indian, i love bhangra, etc etc) so really really want to go. we'll just have to be extra careful. and thanks for the tips about thailand! i think we're going to leave most of that portion up to chance and just go on tips from people we meet, but we're both way more interested in natural scenery/cultural experiences/religious sites than hordes of tourists (especially the dreaded package tourists, haha) so getting away from the most popular sites is a mission. |
