The mating habits of birds
Me and Zoe were having a discussion about birds, pigeons to be exact, and were confused if birds have sex or not. Or, to reproduce, does the female lay eggs in a nest first, and then the male comes along to do the fertilizing? Or, do they have sex and then the female lays the fertilized eggs? Any input would be appreciated! :)

During courtship the male will follow a female around bowing his head, fanning his tail and making ‘cooing’ noises. Eventually a short dance begins with the male’s beak being held in the female’s. Mating [hot steamy chicken sex] occurs shortly afterward and is fairly brief. The male sits on the female’s back flapping his wings to keep balance. It may take several clumsy attempts before the male successfully mates [has hot steamy chicken sex] with the female. Nests are built by the female using material collected by the male. The female then lays clutches of two white eggs. Young pigeons are known as ‘squabs’. They are fed from a special substance produced in the pigeon’s crop known as ‘pigeon milk’. This substance is high in fat and protein and low in carbohydrate.

just to add to this wonderful thread, male birds don't have penises (increases drag substantially and thus makes it much harder to fly) and thus there is no "intercourse" or "hot steamy chicken sex" as it were.. it's more of a "squirting the secret sauce into some area of the females in a hope that some of it will get in kinda thing".
