chuck palahniuk's new book 'haunted'

this book just came out two days ago. been waiting a couple of months for it to finally arrive and rushed out and bought it the day it hit shelves.

i've only read to page 60 so far (it's 400 pages, his biggest book yet) but i really like it. it's a bunch of short stories that make up a larger novel about a team of writer's that go away on a writer's retreat and get held hostage there by some old guy.

the first story called 'Guts' is SO gross. and i mean, gross. it made me feel kinda sick...but it was a cool story. apparently, when he went on a book reading tour, when he read that story out-loud a couple of people passed out in the audience. i could see why.

anyway else a fan of his writing? picked up this book yet?

it's funny because my friend was just telling me about that sort of thing happening a few days ago and i didn't believe him, but i guess it does happen. pretty fucking awful thing to happen to someone. wouldn't wish that on my worst enemy.

shudder.

Palahniuk is cool, but how much of his other stuff have you read? After like 2-3 of his books, I began to see him as sort of a one-trick pony. His new stuff is sort of relying on shock value and the name he built up with his previous work, if you ask me. He's still riding the coat tails of Choke and Fight Club.

Sounds like a good read. I'll have to add it to my list.

So far, I'm working on The Rule of Four, then The Five People You Meet in Heaven.

i can toootally understand where you're coming from with this. he has a certain style and there are points in his books where things get repetitive...like certain themes and such. the things that palahniuk likes to do is peel back the layers of humanity until all you can see are the really crazy shitty things that people do to each other; that's a lot of what 'haunted' is about. i'm about a quarter of the way through it and all of the short stories have been about people getting fucked over by other people and crazy crazy things like that.

he defiinitly has a certain style, and yes that style can get repetitive, but i think his themes change enough. Diary was very different from his other books, as was Lullaby (they started dealing with supernatural things). most of his books are social commentaries on somethings...like diary was with tourism and lullaby was with the death penalty.
