I dont like this, for me, it feels like i am in a male dominated scene. When i play out, i feel alot of pressure, i dont know why, but its worst at the Lotus, like they are waiting for me to fuck up. you can see it in my face...
I wish there were way more females in the dnb scene that would come out more often. |

When i play in other citys i am fully confident and dont doubt myself at all, ive played amazing sets away from home. I just find it hard to relax when every male dnb dj is standing there listining and waiting for their turn on the decks. |

I can agree that female dj's need more exposure as a way to inspire more women/girls. Three years ago you wouldnt of been able to make a full line up of local female dj's for APEX. Now not only do we have a full stage... but we have at least one female DJ on 9/16 stages!!! Not to mention 5+ females taking part as promoters and 2-3 stages run by females only! This is great as its only going to become more "normal" for anyone to be involved like this the scene.
The hardest part about being a female dj is getting respect and be taken seriously. And for that I have to disagree with advertising looks over bio. Theres a reason I said NO to having a picture of me on my cd. "Im a DJ not a model" As for the political correctness... I think your kinda right... the more we seperate and make a big deal about "female dj's" than the more of a deal were going to get. Although promotion wise its great and personaly I love how it inspires many more females to jump abored! The more female DJ's we have than the less of a deal its going to be ;) Last edited by Ree Fresh; Jun 20, 05 at 07:03 PM. |

I think girls think too much (ironic statement I know)... I've noticed that girls who promote themselves as "female djs" usually have zero talent. I've always thought it to be silly when such an effort has to be made to encourage or make females feel welcome in any sort of male dominanted domain. If you want to do something, do it.
But then again I could only think this way because I don't even have enough style to have my picture up there.... :p |

I read the whole post and both sides have valid points. I am playing on this stage and proud to BE PLAYING. NOT TO BE PLAYING BECAUSE I HAVE BOOBS. SHEESH....
Here is my bio : Mirka is a Vancouver based artist on a mission to spread musical joy through intellengent, thought provoking beats. Musically inspired by the darker, more intellectual sound-scapes of progressive, tribal techno, tech trance and psytrance she seeks out uniquely beautiful music to turn her sets into works of art. Mirka’s determination to expand her musical as well as intellectual horizons has led her down a unique path of discovery. Her love affair with music has spanned well over two decades and is reflected in her background of classical violin studies as well as her deep appreciation for opera and jazz. At the age of 11 she traveled to Prague, Czech Republic where she was exposed to early techno and fell in love. Upon returning to Vancouver she became increasingly frustrated with the lack of exposure the music she loved so dearly had in her home town. More content to spend evenings in her bedroom listening to music than hanging out at the mall, she started making mixtapes for her friends splicing together hip hop samples in lieu of electronica. Her closet passion for electronic sounds festered over the next ten years and resulted in the modern DJ she has become. Not willing to have her style be categorized into any specific genre as she feels it is too cookie cutter, Mirka will play anything regardless of classification if it fits into her specific vision of the moment. Her DJing has taken her to large events such as Spooky 8 (Vancouver, Oct. 31st, 2003) and on the air on 90.1FM radio every Friday where she plays a cross section of hard trance, techno and progressive, plus multiple venutres to other cities for special events including Calgary (NYE 2003) and Regina (NYE 2002), as well as for Ice Age: Land before time 3. She has made appearances on afterhoursdjs.org and djlcrn.com both Los Angeles based radio shows... Her album is due out in september 2005 and she is currently working on expanding her live performance to include custom visuals and eventually a full on live PA experience. Artists performed with/beside: Blank & Jones, Chris Liberator, Hennes&Cold, Timeok, The Thrillseekers, Lange,John Selway, Tomcraft, Anne Savage, Svenson (of Svenson&Gielen), Mauro Picotto, Blank&Jones,Kai Tracid, CJ Stone and BT. CD releases: Mirka L. Cerny - "Propaganda" Mirka L. Cerny - "Broken but fixable" Mirka L. Cerny - "Technology vol 1" Mirka L. Cerny - "The darkness and the light" 2x CD set Mirka Cerny "Postal" Mirka Cerny "Ammuition for an eletronically challenged planet" Mirka Cerny "The 5th Regiment" I feel really terrible about this whole forum...I feel bad for the wankers who were "soooooooooooooo nice to me" when I worked at boomtown and none of you even remotely tried to be nice (except Marty who at lest tried to defend me a bit) it seems fakeness doesn't only lie in sillicone parts. If you have a dick you can be just as fake. I don't care if people say our stage is going to suck. I have never once tried to market myself as a FEMALE DJ. I have begged people to just think of me as A DJ....NO SEX ATTACHED. I think what Chrissy is trying to do is expose GOOD DJ's period. Look at all the other stages. Not very many women playing on them. And not becuase there is a lack of good ones either. I wish people would just book who was good and not who is popular or who will possibly get them a gig or who will help them score something. It is really ridiculous. If anyone wants a cd, pm me. My last live radio show is this friday 10-12am 90.1fm JUne 24th so you can hear me live. I have never professed to be perfect but no one is. And I have heard everyone fuck up. I still love all of you everyone has their off days. I am flatterred Chrissy asked me to play. Come and watch if you want. There will be no nakedness but HOT BEATS. For the record, I'm sure all the dj's playing are great. I support you all. Go team. However, my point is, it's silly to only try to sell the fact that it's an all girl stage with a bunch of pictures with the hope that the horny members of this fourm will respond with stupid replies saying: "this is going to be hot!" "Hot dj's yes!!" And shit like that. This isn't directed at butterfly (because she actually stood up and posted a bio): If you want respect, shut up, stop posing for pictures like that, and play your music. |
