Self tanner

Ok I think this one has been done before but I searched for it and I couldnt find it. Anyway today I am trying the fake tanner thing for the first time. But I've heard so many stories of people going orange or not applying it right. All I can do is stare at the bottle. I've had my shower, exfoliated, waxed yesterday and mosterized my ankles, knees and elbows. So I think i have it covered.

I also did a test patch at the spa the other day, and I don't look like I have
jaundice or anything, so I think it's a go. But I think I would feel better if I knew anyone else that has tried some fake tanners and had a good experiance. And also if they have any ones they would recomend and stay away from. (which is too late for me really because I already bought it)
Anyway other then the steps above, any other tips to make sure I end up with normal looking skin afterwards? And how did you apply it so that you didn't miss any spots? I'm thinking of working my way up from my feet to my face. And I have my mom helping with my back.
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH I hope this goes well.
(oh and if anyone was wondering which one I got. I went with the Aveda Sun Source. So if it isn't good POST NOW!!!! lol :p

I've had okay experiences with self tanners.
No need to worry though, if you go a little streaky, just put some lemon juice and salt together and make a paste out of it and scrub scrub scrub!
The mixture will help tone down the tanner and help to even you out.
best of luck!

Interesting... I just came from the London Drugs and purchased a bottle myself. What kind did you get? I bought ROC - 100ml @ $19. This is a moisturising self-tanning lotion for face and body. You see the effects within 30 minutes.

L'Oreal Sublime Bronze is also good. It's going for about $14 right now. I normally use the gel in medium. This is just for body though.

Jergens came out with one called "Natural Glow" which builds up shades to your preference b/c it has a small amount of self-tanner within the product. This is also for body.

Neutrogena also has a similar product, and a face one to go with it.

If all else fails, go for a mystic tan. Three shades - fair, medium, dark. For first timers, try one without bronzer in it, and the second time around with bronzer. Remember NOT to pull a "Ross" off Friends.

Happy Fake Tanning! :)

^hahaha! Yah I got sucked into the Aveda one ($22) when I was at the spa yesterday getting waxed. i think my biggest concern is just getting it on properly. But I think there is a bit of room for error, since it seems like the first coat goes on kind of subtle.

And thanks tips for the advice on the lemon and salt. I'll try that if I'm a failure at applying this stuff. :y:

Actually most of the products now are modified to "streak-free". Just make sure to hit every spot, and if you don't, well you can go back to do touch ups.

How long does it take for the Aveda to show up?

I don't understand how anything can be streak free though...
Its how you put it on that causes the streaks, no?
Too much in one spot will leave the skin looking darker....

I'm terrible at self tanner... thats why the lemon and salt is a heaven sent.

Hmm.. I think I'm gonna opt for the mystic tan. Saw it on TV last year and it looks pretty cool, not to mention easy. Anyone know how much it costs? :)

All I can say is that you should always go with a lighter self tanner! If you want to be dark...and your pasty white...you will be orange. Be careful and best of luck. :)

yah this one looks like it goes on fairly subtle to start, so I figured it was a good one to begin with. The girl said if it works then just apply more a couple days later to go darker. So I don't think it's going to be drastic.

Mystic tans average about $40. Try Sunscape. I go there and it rocks! It's a bit overwhelming at first, cuz all the nozzles spray hard simultaneously. They recommend holding your breath, but with that gust of heavy spray it's a bit difficult.

Is it face too? Or just body? I wouldn't recommend something for body to be put on your face :(

You go into the little room, and you have the option of butt naked to bikini, or your preference. They provide you with a cream moisturizer that you should apply to your knees, ankles, elbows, and I put some around my nose to help prevent "over bronzing". You jump into the booth, and the computer will countdown when it will start.

There is approximately 4 spray jets infront of you. You position yourself in a mid-crouch with your elbows pointing out. After it sprays for about 10 seconds, you turn around, but make sure you do the same pose with your hands safely hidden infront of your stomach. This prevents the palms of your hands to become "bronzed".

After the spray is concluded, you towel yourself off like you would when you get out the shower. Start with the face first.

Hope that helps. :)

PS... Make sure to shower/exfoliate/shave prior to going, and no moisturizers/lotions. Also, no makeup. It will run with the mystic tan.

It's for both. I've finished applying it to my whole body now. but not my face yet. I want to exfoliate my face again before. I found that the process took a little while. but probably because I was being pretty anal about it. Although I found when I rubbed it in a lot I sometimes got little chunks. I think maybe I should have left it, instead of rubbing still after it started to dry. I think I'm going to do my face tomorrow after I see how it goes on my body.

^Oh and also the girl at aveda just said to use a loofa all over. and then another one said she uses sugar??? I dont know about that. I just used the loofa and scrubbed all over. and make sure to do the elbows, knees and ankle, heel area. because if they are dryer i hear they can absorb more colour and it will look strange because they get darker then the rest of you.

Ok so here is the report. Interesting lol
well I found some patches that I missed today. So I have hopefully patched myself up.
I was a little uneven as well so I tried the salt and lemon trick. seems to do an ok job. I find that it helps take off some access colour. I think probably because the salt dries out the area helping it flake off??? anyway I saw some colour on the wash cloth so I'm just rubbing it all over to even myself out. I just wish I could get the colour out of the tips of my fingers. lol oops. They look a bit funny I guess I didn't wash them enough.
Now I havent done the face yet. But the change was a bit darker then expected. So I can't get away with not putting it on, or I'll have a line right under my jaw line. So I'm about to do that now.
Wish me luck!!! I gota remember not to touch my face for a while. I'm so nervous. :p
I just hope I don't look like dixie wentworth from mad tv. hahaha I could be the new host of cabana chat.

^ i found with self tanners like that, that it was good to wash your hands in between, not just after. so you would do your legs, wash your hands, then do your upper body and wash your hands. then there's less time that the product is on the hands, so it won't absorb as much.

jergen's has a "natural glow" moisturizer now that adds the slightest amount of tint each time you use it. it's actually pretty rad. it's a good, non-greasy moisturizer, and because the amount of tint is so light, you really can't fuck up the application. sure, it takes a bit longer to become tanned, but it doesn't take that long. i find it looks more natural as well, since it's not an instant tan where one day you're pale, the next day you have a tan.

Oh I did wash them after each section. I just must not have been thurough enough with it. especialy on my pointer and thum and under some of my nails. haha I trimmed them because it dyed the tips kind of yellow. I'm just going to keep scrubbing.
Although my face seems to be comming in even at least, which was my biggest concern.

self tanners are pretty much just paint for your skin. fake n bake (tanning salon) or just go out in the sun it will last much longer.

^ it may last longer but it takes longer, is likely to leave you with tan lines, and is worse for your skin.
