ps- everyone getting tattooos isn't some sort of 'recent trend' historially speaking. Asian characters, maple leafs, butterflies, ugly tribal shit is all incredibly played (especially on the lower back UGH GOD). When I was working in a tattoo shop 7-8 years ago people were still coming in to get them en masse. I kind of felt a lot like they just really wanted a tattoo and that was a safe idea for them to get one in a rush. Oh yeah, I always thought people should be totally cautious about getting a traced asian character tattooed on them, this is beacuse anyone who writes an asian language knows that a proper stroke order must be utilized to give the character meaning. You can tell by looking at a character if it wasn't done correctly, and if you've got some unknowing white dude doing the work for you, you may just end up with a meaningless design on your body. |

These are all some valid points but I have reasons for all of them -Hope is a very special word for me which nobody but myself and people who are close to me would understand -my heritage is mostly french and greek, which wouldn't look very interesting because I dont read or speak either languages. -I am also getting the english meaning written on -I have been thinking about this tattoo for a long time, I have four others, all well thought out. Thanks though |

^but why a character? Obviously it's your body + money and you can do whatever you want with it...I just don't think it's the greatest idea if you think "it looks cool" cause I remember when i used to think that Mr. Dress up looked cool, and somehow don't think so now.

she alread said she has a reason for getting it :) and it doesnt matter if didnt its something she likes. Alot of people are SOO hung up on the fact that ur tattoo has to have this huge deep meaning and has to represent something, WELL they dont :) all the tatt all over my left arm doesnt mean shit, i got them cause i enjoy the experience of getting a tattoo start to finish, the actual tattoo is just a bonus. |

If I was cool I woulda used that to promote my partay... but alas I am not *sobs*
I say leave the girl alone... let her get a character if she wants to. I know I sure as hell wouldn't and personally I think it's silly when non-asian people have it done but it's not my fucking body now is it? I have tattoos... they mean things to me... some people prolly wouldn't like or understand them but I don't care. Am I getting more... sure... and you know what... I'm even thinking about getting one or two that're asthetically pleasing to me not because they have a huge deep meaning. To each their own I say... leave the poor kid alone. |

I lived in china for 7 months and while i was there learned quite a few characters in mandarin. i thinkits kind of funny coming back home and reading some peoples tatty.s and it doesnt even remotely resemble what they think it does. if your geting and asian language done... really make sure its right. tattoo artists here dont know how to do the cligraphy properly and one wrong positioning of a brush stroke can make chili pepper into mayonnaise. or other worse things than that lol. so just be carefull.

lol... mine, the three characters are in katakana, so they're read phoenetically: o-ta-ku.
it's a pretty big insult in Japan though, much like 'nerd' was in Western society in the 80's, before nerds became cool. Twice now, I've had this conversation with random Japanese girls on the street: her: "Um, do you know what your tattoo says?" me: "Oh yeah, it says <pointing at each character in turn> "Fight With Honour"" her: <jaw drops> me: "Baka gaijin da yo, ne?" <big grin> |
