sooooooooo much fun. now standard will be a little different for every vehicle because of their torque. there are some vehicles that you don't even have to hit the gas to start moving in first but those are normally in high torque engines. if you're worring about not being able to stop, don't. nothing has changed about the brakes, they are the same in an automatic and standard. true you will be able to stop quicker in a standard by using engine brakes but as for just using the pedal you stop just the same as an automatic. get a friend with a standard, big empty parking lot (night time would be best so you don't embarrass yourself too much) and try it. you are going to stall it a few times but everytime you get it a little more. this little tip helped me .......... hold the rpms at 2000 - 2500 and then SLOWLY let off the clutch. holding the rpm steady is pretty key to starting to move when learning. anyways hope my speal helps you out a little.
ps. it took me a few hours but i understood what i was doing way before i touched a clutch. might take you a day if you work at it. and it's true once you got stick you can't go back. pps. about the Mazda 3 GT car that someone said earlier. you might have something called a "slap-stick". my friend has a 97 Crysler 300M that is an auto but you can put it in a certain spot and tap the shifter to the left or the right to shift without having to use a clutch. depends on ur skills with this shiet. alot of people can learn in a day or less. some a few days. some even more. and there are those who just should not drive stick and wont ever really be able to do it. which on r u? well i guess u'll just have to find out for urself

lol reminds me of a thing my friend did. k he got a new car (pimp 86 Celica with the 350Z daytona blue paint) and we were drivin around town with a bunch of friends who knew he had just got the car. well we were driving through town and all of a sudden he was like "WTF! there are 3 pedals!?!?!?" obviously totally joking but one of the girls that were in the car T.O.T.A.L.L.Y flipped. like if you take your hands off the wheel she'll freak:) might be one of those things that you had to be there for but man was it funny :D

Screw driving schools. Just get someone you know to take you out. I just jumped in and gave'r. Just remember if you are uncertain of whats going on just put in the clutch heh.
Really the first thing you learn is how to bring the gas in slowly as you let go of the clutch. First get to a parking lot, put the clutch in and play around with the gears to feel how u pull into 2nd and 3rd, etc. Then put it into first, slowly bring the clutch out. Some clutchs let go closer to the middle, some you have to let out way farther. Once you find that spot you start slowly with the gas, and once you got that timing drive around switching into 2nd and 3rd. If you sketch about gearing down u can just put the clutch in and move it into Neutral and just brake quickly and come to a stop or throw it into gear again. It's all about being comfortable, so easy to learn. Of course your gonna stall and look like a retard for a few days to a week. Once you have done it a while you'll be able to shift in your sleep. Becomes natural, except you control your car way more without actually having to think about shifting Last edited by decypher; Aug 12, 05 at 12:42 AM. |

I learned how to drive stick in my sleep, without doing it before.
I dremt all night I was driving a car that was standard, clutch, gear, etc. etc. I woke up that morning, hopped in a car with standard transmission and drove it like I had been driving one all my life. true story. |

ya man. tho only negative thing about pulling it outa gear when stopping (instead of downshifting) is you might forget what gear to put it back in if you didn't come to a complete stop. oh also when downshifting make dead sure you know what gear you are going into aka from 4th to 1st instead of 3rd ...... you can blow an engine that way but it's pretty difficult to make that mistake. fun thing about standards is that you can (if in a decently horsepowered car) spin the tires when shifting into 2nd or 3rd. makes ya seem like a better driver if you can shift that quick. lol another thing, if you plan on racing people ........... mastering double clutching is a good thing to learn. gotta have good co-ord with the feet tho.

It took me one solid evening of driving around w/my mom coaching me to become confident. I already knew the basics since I sorta learned when I was 16, but it had been 5 years when I bought my car so I was a little rusty!
It's really easy unless you have no hand-food coordination! |

it's pretty hard NOT to be able to tell what gear to shift back into I mean really, check your speed, it's common sense It's all about getting a feel for the car - it will become second nature after no time at all |

parts aren't that expensive.. unless ur lookin @ doin all ur internals and major engine upgrades then thats expensive for every type of car :D and if u ever need performance parts/rims/body kits.. i work at a car garage
