yeah, i saw this in the paper yesterday (or was it the day before) and i'm totally not surprised. this isn't the first time that vancouver has topped a survey done for the best cities to live in.
i've been to over half of the cities on that list and i totally agree that vancouver deserves the number one spot. if we could fix our poverty problem on the downtown eastside vancouver would be almost impossible to beat for the number one spot. go vancity! ps. yes, this is going to make vancouverites more snobby. heh. |

Actually, I kind of like that Vancouver doesn't try to hide their poverty problem. It would be nicer if some of our best historical spots like gastown and chinatown could open up to be a little more safer to tourists, poverty is reality. In places like NYC mayors generally like to try to hide the citys poverty/drug/prostutition problems, they try to sweep them away from areas like time square which just leads to higher concentrations in other areas. Police in NYC also are really anal retentive about how their citizens act, my friend lived there and said her friend once got arrested for sitting on some steps because they thought he was a bum. That is just weird. I kind of like how our city counsel has recently done things that make the people realize that this is definitely something we can't ignore by implementing the four pillars strategy and putting in safe injection sites, etc.

Totaly agree.....But When I passe in certain streets seeing woman as skinny as a stick, and men as dirty as a dump, I think we should seriously work On a re-education center or whatever(Like given them a reason to live)....Even if somepeople would be nice enough to employe one of them, I don't even think they would be able to stand up again... Of course I think some of them would probably take that as change, but poverty is also crual, if we give a chance to one we must give a chance to others.... The error is human, lets not make it harder as it is all ready... I'm sure theres work to be done, without hiding the reality side of course... peace |

Vancouver isnt doing fuck all. Just lip service. Now areas like strathcona, and commercial drive(who already had a visible homeless situation) are doing even worse. I dont know how we managed to get a safe injection site in the first place, but its underfunded, employees are extremely overworked, and the proactive iniatives that are to be carried out in congruence with the site, are grossely unsupported. In seperate news there some new hawt live/work lofts off powell and main, as well as off alexader and main. Not to mention the new and stylishly vancouver hip woodwards cultural centre. In other news triage, three bridges, the two east end aa+na meetings are feeling the crunch with rising rent. Vancouver council along side with federal and provinical level governmental backbenchers intend to lay out a plan that will put all poor/homeless/actively using members of society on a wooden raft, and floated out into the burrard inlet. North Van/West Van violently detests...more news in the morning.... burst the bubble already |
