$100 Laptop [not yet in production]

The MIT Media Lab has launched a new research initiative to develop a $100 laptop—a technology that could revolutionize how we educate the world's children. To achieve this goal, a new, non-profit association, One Laptop per Child (OLPC), has been created. The initiative was first announced by Nicholas Negroponte, Lab chairman and co-founder, at the World Economic Forum at Davos, Switzerland in January 2005.

"The proposed $100 machine will be a Linux-based, full-color, full-screen laptop that will use innovative power (including wind-up) and will be able to do most everything except store huge amounts of data. These rugged laptops will be WiFi- and cell phone-enabled, and have USB ports galore. Its current specifications are: 500MHz, 1GB, 1 Megapixel."

thats pimp

sounds like it'll be enough to run production software into an amp.. that'd be so handy to have for 100 bucks I'd buy one

thats really cool. It would be a good learning tool for younger kids ....

teenagers on the other hand have enough excuses for not doing their schoolwork as it is.
Constant access to msn, computer games/emulators, and junky web sites is not going to help with their school work/learning one bit. If they really need web access at school (which they do sometimes ), theres always the school library or computer lab to do brief internet work.

If the computers were specially designed or setup so you cant fuck around/waste time on them, then perhaps it would be really great for teen students as well.

i wonder if access to more technology is actaully indicative of better education, and a wider influence in the long run, or are positve results more an example of public perception?

lets slow things down shall we, if we could somehow convince the tech gurus of the world, as well as designers and manufacturers, that is pays to invest in humanitarian efforts that actaully address the relevent situational problems of the world.

on a side note, one of the major mandates of foreign aid/redevelpment in haiti is building an expansive wireless web network. Im sure all the residents of such ghettos as cite soliel will appreciate being able to use their laptops(if they actaully have them) to search on ebay for designer clothes, and autographed kiss lp's, who needs food, water and a sustainable food crops?

but then again, im just a poor lazy ass who drinks too much-
