Boy calls for McDonald's boycott SOFTWOOD-LUMBER PROTEST: Unions back 10-year-old's plans to pressure U.S. gov't Matthew Ramsey The Province Sunday, November 13, 2005 CREDIT: Nick Procaylo, The ProvinceLuke McAndress wants the U.S. to return the estimated $5 billion in duties on softwood-lumber imports. He thinks the 'we want our money back' initiative may help. For 10-year-old Luke McAndress, Canada's ongoing softwood-lumber dispute boils down to a truth as unadorned as a french fry. "If we stole $5 billion from the U.S., they would want it back," he says. By $5 billion, he's referring to duties collected by the U.S. on Canadian softwood imports since May 2002 -- and he wants it returned to Canada so badly that he's organizing a nation-wide boycott of one of America's most visible exports: McDonald's. It's McAndress's hope that the Dec. 3 boycott will pressure the U.S. to return $5 billion in duties that a NAFTA panel has already ruled were unfairly collected and should be repaid. Clearly, McAndress is not like most 10-year-olds. He says he has followed the trade dispute closely since it began -- when he was seven. When no repayment came after the Oct. 5 NAFTA ruling and U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice went on to dismiss Canadians as "apocalyptic" in their concerns, Luke decided enough was enough. It was time to take the matter into his own, home-schooled hands. "I'm interested in social-justice issues," says the New Westminster resident. "At first I thought we should boycott all American goods, but they own pretty much everything. I had to decide on one thing. Why not McDonald's? To put his plan into action, Luke enlisted a socially-aware 13-year-old Calgary buddy, Matthew Monteith-Forsyth, and the "we want our money back" initiative was born. Just as McDonald's has its iconic Golden Arches, the softwood-cash campaign has a few catchy slogans of its own: "Yo yo yo, give us our dough!" and "No Mc-D on Dec. 3." Luke says his father, Bruce McAndress-Davis, "got kind of carried away" with the website (www.wewantourmoneyback.ca), the T-shirts and the bumper stickers, but he's very pleased with how the initiative is catching on. The National Union of Public and General Employees, with 340,000 members, has signed on in support. The B.C. Carpenters Union is backing him. Burnaby-New Westminster MP Peter Julian (whom Luke says is a "nice man" and a political idol, along with NDP leader Jack Layton) is a supporter, as is NDP MLA Chuck Puchmayr. "A boycott of McDonald's in Canada is an absolutely wrong approach in dealing with this situation," McDonald's spokesman Ron Christianson said in an interview. "We hire local people. We hire local suppliers. So any boycott of McDonald's Canada is going to be felt by people in Canada." McDonald's Canadian operations have 1,375 restaurants and generated $2.54 billion in sales last year, he said. [email protected] Fuckin Yanks rippin' us off ! We'll show em' ! No one buy McDix ! for some reason I highly doubt the kid at 7 had the comprehension and smarts to get everything going on in the dispute. It really does look like mommy and daddy are helping him make his decisions and just using him as a mascot, the home schooling part doesn't help.

There are kids out there who get very passionate about somthing and will stop at nothing. It's kinda obviouse that the kid isnt that informed since hes asking ppl to boycot mc dicks when its run and owned by Canadians.
I think the kid must of been listning to his parents or teacher go over some politics and continued to ask questions wanting to find out more about whats going on. I wouldnt think the parents are really living through him, but are deffinently there to suport and inform him as much as possible to make sure that if hes going to take a stand he better do it at his best. Anyways I eat at mc dicks maybe twice a year (not by choice) I think the place should be boycotted for what it is and not just tryign to send a msg to bush. |
