Activist jailed at least four days for heckling PM


Haiti Action Montreal condemns `criminalizing dissent' during
election campaign

Yves Engler, a member of Haiti Action Montreal, is being kept in
jail over the weekend after he disrupted a speech by the Prime
Minister Thursday morning shouting "Paul Martin lies, Haitians die."

Crown prosecutors refused to grant his release when Engler appeared
in court Friday, thirty hours after being detained. He will be in
court again Monday.

"Keeping someone in jail for at least four days because he heckled a
politician during an election campaign is completely outrageous,"
said Nikolas Barry-Shaw, spokesperson for Haiti Action
Montreal. "Has shouting at a politician become a crime in Canada?"

Noting that other people heckled Martin at the same time as Engler
and that the PM has faced hecklers at many events, Barry-Shaw
speculated the Liberal government is particularly sensitive about
criticism of its policies in Haiti.

"Yves Engler has been extremely active in trying to make the
Liberals accountable for their role in the overthrow of Haiti's
elected government and the resulting human rights disaster," said
Barry-Shaw. "He's obviously made some important people very angry."

Engler, who also threw pieces of a human rights report about Haiti
into the air to symbolize the Liberal government's response to
criticism from numerous respected organizations, said he was
surprised by amount of time he was spending in jail.

"It's a strange world when Conrad Black is accused of stealing $80
million but has spent no time behind bars, while I heckled the Prime
Minister and get locked up for at least four days."

Martin Supporting Murderous Regime; Activist Explains Confetti
Disruption

This morning, Haiti Action Montreal member Yves Engler disrupted
Paul
Martin's speech in Montréal. Engler's short attempt to draw
attention
to human rights violations in Haiti was itself cut short when he was
removed by two RCMP officers.

Before he was dragged away, Engler yelled "Martin lies, Haitians
die"
and tossed confetti printed with excerpts of reports from the
international press and human rights groups.

"Paul Martin's Liberals are complicit in the overthrow of democracy
in
Haiti, and are training a brutal police force that is killing
peaceful
protesters," said Engler, who is currently being detained by police.

Representatives of Haiti Action Montreal have presented members of
the
Liberal government with human rights abuses and concerns about
Canada's
support for the government that is carrying them out.

"They have dismissed the information we have given them as
propaganda,"
said Engler.

How can they keep someone in jail longer than 24 hours without charging them? That goes against the Charter if I am not mistaken. And even then I would imagine that shouting at the PM is a non indictable offense, so WTF?

Post 9/11 laws now give them up to 2 weeks before they are supposed to tell family they have you.

For the record, I think yelling during a formal speech is really bad manners for anyone to do, despite opinions or feelings. I also think that a society keeping a minimum of good manners is integral to its survival. That doesn't justify arresting someone though. It just justifies kicking him in the gut and throwing him in the gutter. Which I have no problem with.

Sure. By good manners I mean a minimum amount of respect that you pay to your fellow citizens. That means not budging in lineups, not taking seats from the elderly, not pushing people out of your way when you're in a hurry, and not interrupting people when they give speeches. Social lubricant, you know?

Now, everyone's definition of manners is different. However, I think that we ought to agree that the proper place and time to argue against someone's ideas is after they are done their public speaking. The essence of a free society is respecting your fellow man's right to speak their mind (even fighting to protect their right to do that). I think it casts a shadow on anyone's position when they show a lack of basic civility to their opponent in an academic context (and politics is definitely an academic context, even though it is often mistreated as such). It shows immaturity.

And its becuase he is trying to expose these realities, that government put him in jail. Becuase his knowledge of what Canadian government is doing in Haiti, weakens the very foundation of the giant lies, that we are being fed to us on a daily basis!
