is wearing a hat sideways something grown ups don't do?
So my 30 year old brother is talking about a 21 year old he knows. Apparently this 21 year old wears his hat sideways and always says things like "dats dope" This kid is white and lives in surrey in his parents home. He doesnt contribute to hip hop in any way other then listening to it. My brother explains this and then says "I jsut feel like telling him to grow up" Now my first thought was that hip hop is a lifestyle to some and that ebonics and style are a part of that lifestyle. He basically came up with the fact that what the 21 year old is a fad and he will grow out of it like everyone does. I explained to him "The roots" and how hip hop lifestyle is a bit mroe of jsut a fad its a culture blah blah but he wouldn't give.
does he have a point? I really don't disagree with most of it and was mainly playing the devils advocate during our conversation. I mean very rarely do you see a grown 30+ year old acting and dressing like that unless he is actually a member of the hip hop community. |

We'll probably see more 30 yr olds like this in 5-10 years...afterall, that's where most of us will be in 5-10 years. But to say that people will grow out of it, that's really up to time itself. Only the person in question can really make that decision. This style is very much a culture thing, but who knows...I don't know that he has a point or not, but certainly 'dis be reeeeal life fo shizzle, yo'. :)

i dont think theres anything wrong with wearin your hat sideways.....people can dress how they want....
your brother shouldn't think too hard about things..... most people dress in a way that misrepresents themsleves half the time anyways.... people wear skate gear that dont skate.....people wear camo that that dont litsen to jungle or be in the military......people wear bunsiness type blazers and vests that probably have no knowledge of economics or the business world.... people can wear whatever they feel.....the kid is only 21 too.. maybe when hes your brothers age he'll dress different |

Well i think as long as he is still able to present himself in a professional manner at work and any other time that it is necessary than go for it. And hip hop is a lifestyle, i think, becasue you can have someone like that, all 'gangster' with his ballin' atire, or somone like myself who when looknig at me you probably wouldnt make the natural assumpion that i listen to hip-hop religiously. As long as he is not perpetuating neggative stereotypes like slangin dope etc. than all i can say is to each their own.
And kind of off topic, i think the term wigger is rediculous. Its like saying becasue im not black i cannot listen to rap or hip hop. F*ck that. Cultures generally DO run with race, but a lifystyle is a choice you make. |

I'm 28, I have a kid, I hold down a great job in one of the busiest hospitals in the province, I own a home, I wear baggy jeans, I wear my hat to the side.
What you wear doesn't necessarily dictate your maturity level. As long as you can put it to the side when need be (ie: at work etc...) then keep on doin' whatcha do. |

he could also give up his gangstah affectations entirely yet still be immersed in hip hop culture and 'lifestyle'. Last edited by SEAN!; Dec 07, 05 at 04:08 PM. |

i think you've both got good points, but i think styles do change and develope throughout life right? so this 21 year old may really be feeling hip-hop, but later down the road his life may change and he might not feel so connected anymore with that type of lifestyle. and i think a lot of people pick that type of lifestyle because they don't know who they are or what they are doing in their life.. it's just the mainstream right now right? like i see lots of girls who wear their hats sideways and roll up their pant legs, but when you ask them about hip-hop they're like "oh we love 50 cent!" to me,they might as well be saying "we love britnay spears!" thats why i'm not a HUGE fan of hip-hop.. i appreciate it, and there are some tracks that i absolutely love.. the ones about life and philosophy and whatnot.. but most of it, i grew up in maple ridge riding horses and playing in forests.. i can't really relate to it.. i can only appreciate it! i dunno, i just think i would be mis-representing myself and hip-hop otherwise |
