- walmart - love it or hate it?

I know this was done a year or two back when the Walmart was proposed on SE Marine Drive. However seeing as it's been a while though and having just watched that new doc on Walmart (The High cost of Low Price), it's been on my mind a bit.

So here's the question, can it at this point be argued that Walmart has a positive overall effect on our communities?

Been boycotting walmart for a couple of years now... I haven't even bought toilet paper there. I've also seen the documentary, its sad to see how they are single handedly sucking the life blood of the american economy. Boycott walmart!

I avoid walmart as much as possible political wise. Besides I dont really see that big of a savings there and find they have the most rediculouse line ups ever!!! At least super store has an express check out and is Canadian owned :D

I replied "no" to the poll, but, the "under certain conditions" option got me thinking.

I'd be glad to see and patronize a Wal-Mart under, "certain conditions" (as I'm thinking of them):

-their size does not exceed your average Canadian Tire store.
-they abide by "Fair Trade" agreements and policies.
-full benefits paid to employees.
-fair wages for employees (yes, that means _above_ the gov't. standardized "minimum" wage).
-renewable power sourcing, and "smart"/efficient power consumption.
-full taxation on land, utilities, and profit.

I mean, everyone (in business) keeps talking about a "level playing field".

So, since every mom-&-pop place in Canada plays by the some of the above conditions, why shouldn't Wal-Mart?

Frosty
(Yes. Boycotts Wal-Mart)

You need to try and make a reasonable effort to cover all bases or a survey is basically meaningless.

As much as I hate the way Walmart can beat up and drain small companies I do love getting things on the cheap. I don't think they're fair to their employess but in the same respect they employ a LOT of people who might not have a job at all if it weren't for them.

In this day and age you have to take the good with the bad. Walmart is going to succeed whether you patronize them or not. The fact that I have bills out my ass and little money to burn means I shop there to save money but secretly hate myself a little bit while doing so.

I don't know why the wage thing is a big issue with Wal-Mart, I didn't think there were too many retail stores that paid above minimum wage, I could be wrong.

Wal-mart is much like Microsoft, its pretty easy to find something to bash. I actually saw an interesting show the other day on a Walmart employee who absolutely loved the place. She was a single mom from the southern states with little education and on welfare. Walmart was the only company that would hire her. Long story short she has worked her way up to a trainer position (or something like that) and has gotten off of social services. She seemed to love the place.

Our comapany has done a bit of business with Walmart the past couple years as they are evaluating our fuel cell battery products for use in the Distribution Centers and I can tell you that even their big wigs don't get special treatment when it comes to spending. When they travel they have to share rooms.

There is a much bigger picture that needs to be looked at, ie if Walmart didn't exist where would its 1.5 million employees work, and if they were working somewhere else would they actually make more money?

Then you have to look at the supply chain, how many companies out there survive solely on the fact that they sell huge volume to WalMart?

Lots of unanswered questions.

On a personal level though, I'm not a huge fan but if I know they have something I want cheaper than somewhere else, I will go.

So what I'm getting here is that you pretty much walk around naked and forage for food? Almost everything we eat, wear, use etc... has some poor sap working for less than he should, some poor animal getting butchered.

How many of the parts of your almighty PC were made in Taiwan by kids? Would you stop using that? I'm just throwing it out there because I know you're real big on the boycott this and that front.

Personally I havent seen this documentary. So, I have no idea what you are all talking about. Personally I love walmart. I need a place that I can buy everything from and is cheap. I'm not as rich as the rest of you, so I don't have as large of a choice. Shopping at walmart will save me at least 10 to 20 dollars on grocery's a week. I can use that money. It adds up.

Eh... I've shopped there in the past, but haven't for a long time (not since moving to the L.M., anyways). They never have anything I ever seem to want and, if they do, the savings on what they have there isn't, like, super cheaper. I don't mind putting a few extra bucks into a mom-n-pop shop, but then I did a good amount of growing up in Prince Rupert, a small town that was VERY protective of it's mom-n-pop shops -there were hardly ANY major chains of ANY kind of store there (it wasn't until the latter half of the 80's that they even got a McDonalds, and Starbucks was a non-entity forever until the renovated Safeway there had it added!). I guess I've just grown accustomed to paying those extra few cents and dollars at the smaller retail outlets, and have always budgeted myself accordingly.

Of course, when I get thrifty, I go to the Salvation Army. ;)

Yeah Only Nike and Adidas make clothes.

KFC/McDix is the only source of food on the planet.

I buy clothes that are made in Canada/America.

I but food from Save-On/Safeway, I don't eat fast food.

I own an IBM T41, I'm not too knowledgeable on computer part sweatshops.

I'm not entirely exempt from supporting the system, that's impossible.

I as everyone else am FORCED to cooperate in the corruption.

I on the otherhand do as much as I can in not supporting it.

You'll never see me paying 25$ to watch a Disney movie or buy anything from them.

Eventually I will live in Argentina, farm my own food.

PS: I forgot Starbucks.....slave labour bean pickers.

The matter of fact is that 90-95% of your clothing/products says "made in china" or another 3rd world coutry. As for the products that say "made in US" or "made in Canada"... well it's most likly that the parts were made in a 3rd world country, shiped to the US ro Canada and than assembled here to get the "made in US" or "made in Canada" stamp.

What angers me the most is not so much that the products we buy are made in sweatshops or served to us by cheep labour... it's how we pay about 80% more than what the cost to make it was. All the extra money that we pay for our products go into fancy stores and advertisment. Micheal Jordan will get millions from nike when a child making the shoes will barly earn $2 a day in a sweat shop (maybe less?)
