I bought a Acer laptop from NCIX for my dad for his b-day. I was blown away at the build quality as well as one other major factor: It was upgradable. The motherboard & video card aren't upgradable, but everything else, including CPU is made to be modularly upgradable: Wireless card, Bluetooth, RAM, CPU, HDD, DVD/RW hugely impressive for a $700 laptop.

damn...if u had a discount at london drugs id get an ibook or powerbook in a second. seriously...u cant go wrong with one. mine broke down and i got it fixed (cost me zero dollars) and im still not one bit upset about it. u can still connect to ure pc at home with it (well that's why john did with my pb), and its soooo much user friendly than pcs. i dont know much with fixing comps, but with macs all the doctor stuff is yes/nos, 1,2,3s.. really easy to repair things. i love it, and i highly recommend macs.
ps. im gonna add that there's this myth with incompatibility with macs and pcs...seriously i havnet had any probs with transfering files from my home pc to my pb.. EXCEPT for my logitech webcam, that's about it. yes i use word on my mac, and yes you can download internet explorer or nescape or mozilla on macs as well. macs are definately pc user friendly. in terms of brands:
Sony - Overpriced for the specs you get - all you're buying is brand name. Toshiba - Number 1 selling laptops in the world - Horrible on battery life. Dell - Overall they are good - especially for their award winning support. Gateway: lowest end shit you can put in a computer. Macs - well they're pretty. a little too pretty. Acer - Much like dell but without the support. LG - Decent HP - Decent |

i love my toshiba satellite. even though instantly when i dissconnect it from a powersource the battery starts dying and the screen starts dimming...and it's just really annoying, as long as it's plugged-in everythings gorgeous. i bought it at staples, which i've been very happy with, they had the lowest price when i was looking around, plus lowered the price a few hundred when i paid in cash, AND have been really good about service. i can take my laptop in and the next day it will be fixed. compared to when i have bought things from london drugs, it has taken up to a week because the tech guy is so clogged up, same situations happened with future shop and best buy.
so, i recommend staples. even though, it's not the first place that comes to mind when you think of buying computers. OH! has anyone here bought an Alien Laptop? those things look wicked...i've never seen where you can buy one except online tho... |

if you're interested, i'll be selling my laptop after christmas (as i'm getting a powerbook instead)
it's a dell inspiron 6000, and it comes with complete care (next business day service! woo!). it's in excellent condition. no scratches or anything, and it works great. just thought i'd throw it out there :) |
