Laptops
So I am in the market for a laptop.
I currently have a fabulous desktop at home. But I am going back to school and want the mobility of a laptop. It will serve as a bit of a utilitarian device, so I don't need it to be a top performer. I am looking to stay within $500-$1000. A few things though... I despise macs. I need to be able to sync it with my home computer. A wireless ethernet card, of course! I have thought about buying from these places; Dell, Ebay, London Drugs, ATIC. Suggestions? Personal experiences? Thanks. |

Seriosly consider Dell.
- Excellent support - good price ( your not paying for a name ) - able to get a 4 year warrenty thats from Dell....not a 3rd party company like Future Shop and Best buy. Basically if you get a Toshiba then they come with a 1 year warrenty from them. Future Shop will sell you extended coverage but its a pain in the ass to deal with it if anything goes wrong after the 1 year. Dell had major problems 2-3 years ago with their laptop quality.....but the news ones are very well built. We buy Dell laptops and desktops at my work we got sick of all the troubles fromToshiba and Compaqs Last edited by DJDeeb; Dec 16, 05 at 01:21 PM. |

That is what I thought too...and the extended warranties from those big box stores aren't worth the paper in which they are written.
The only concern I have with the laptop thing is if for ANY reason something happens, how long am I without one? http://www1.ca.dell.com/content/prod...DT1&l=en&s=bsd This is the one I was eyeing. |

If you get the Support for "Next Business day" then usually you will be down for about a day or so.
I'm not 100% sure what the "Complete care" sevice is? I think it has somehting to do with coverage for if you say drop it or spill coffee and what not on it and damage it. |

The "return to depot" service i thik requires you to ship it back east. So it could be gone for at least a week or so.
I would get the 3 Yr Limited Warranty with 3 Yr NBD Onsite Service and 3 Yr Tech Support Unless your accident prone then add the complete care option might be worth it |

They have often cheap parts or ''shitty parts'' on them but thats what makes them affordable but performant, and not all models are like that... I don't think she will need ultraGaming chips anyway... But I've had two Dells still have them, still working perfect, if you take care if them they will last long.. And AVANA I advice you to take this one if your going for Dell http://www1.ca.dell.com/content/prod...DT1&l=en&s=bsd If you wanna work correctly you will need Wireless, the screen is wider with better resolution too, and Pentium M Processor are much better then Celeron M's for mobility and performance at the same time, cause Im sure you will want to watch videos on it too..And If you ever wanna upgrade you memory(RAM) you can do it on that one not the InspironTM B120 cause 256mb is not much.. And if you think you taking risk about cafe on your keyboard just by one of those plastic things to put on your keyboard Last edited by maztraz; Dec 16, 05 at 03:29 PM. |

my experience with dell has been that the parts can be flakey at times, but they will replace them pretty much no questions asked. however, i'm a business customer, not sure if they'd bend over the same way for an ordinary consumer.

True... Thats why the Warranty is the most important with Dell, but I've never had probleme with my parts cause I always bought the most performant ones like Inspiron 9300 Last year with all the best features NO PROBLEMES so long, but its probably cause I know how to take care of my computers... |

Just to clear this up, I game, but I don't want to game from my laptop, and my desktop machine is pimped out for that now.
My laptop will be used for two things, school and work(the laptop needs to be fast enough to run simply). And I want to be able to sync it with my home computer. And I don't care if the product isn't always the best, if their customer support is superior to everyone elses, that is what would make me buy my computer there. |

Its what I thought Being able to upgrade your computer is the most important and first thing you must look when you buy a computer, thats something you won't always find at a low price. Its better to add a few extra bucks and being able to keep your computer longer trust me... I don't know how you take care of your computers, if you have no idea on how computers work I recommend taking this, they have good Customer support(Personal experience).. That means they will take care of your computer replacing what ever is broken and installation with full Techsupport(with Hotline) and what ever is needed to keep your computer alive 3 Yr Return to Depot Service with 3 Yr Complete Care and 3 Yr Tech Support If you can't afford it and you think you have someone to handle your computer if you have systeme crash, this one is good deal only if you need Technical support only 3 Yr Return to Depot Service with 3 Yr Tech Support I advice you get a minimum of 512mb RAM or 1GB for Gamming Wireless I doubt you wanna mis that The Resolution of your screen is important to, if your gonna be using it often it is important to clearly see what is on your screen... Pentium M is better for Gamming just in case Last edited by maztraz; Dec 16, 05 at 04:41 PM. |

I just got a new laptop mainly for school a month ago and it is an HP from Best Buy. I thought about Dell and was about to go ahead with it, but the customer service we recieved was horrible, probably one of the worst companies I have dealt with. Really don't have anything good to say about Dell. I understand ordering through the website is more efficient, but I would prefer to see the laptop before I buy it. Another major thing to consider is the weight of the laptop if you're using it for school. I had a Toshiba last year and it was waaaaaay to heavy to lug from Burnaby to UBC each day. My HP right now is super-light, and I am really happy with it overall. The wireless card in it is good, the battery lasts a while (also super-important, especially for lectures that go over an hour), and it's also got the Quickplay feature, which is convenient. ...and I agree with all the people saying stay away from Compaq :/

What's the Proccesor&operating system on your Desktop?
If you have a Pentium II and up with Windows 98, ME or LINUX and up with aviously USBports you should be just fine.... Yeah, I should of said that before but not everyone takes it as advice... DO NOT BUY IN BIG STORES UNLESS YOU KNOW WHAT YOU ARE BUYING The policy they have in those kind of stores is: ''SELL CHEAP BUT FAST'' And the probleme with those stores is not only you don't always get good customer services but you do not always get the latest products at the best price... Okay I will give you one piece of advice that should save you alot of time... The best deals maybe not the lowest pricess but good customer services and latest products is in little or medium professional private stores or directly from the manufacturing company, cause they know they're products and know what they are selling, so they will be perfectly able to inform you on the products that you are interested in. One of the good deals is often you deal directly with the technician. The problemes when you buy in big stores is you have no idea what the Technician is about cause you only deal with the seller and the seller is dealing with the Technician but the seller isn't the Technician and hes working with your tool. And Even if by chance I say by chance cause you won't always find good sellers that know what&how? the product was made, He/she might not know everything but I think theres minimum to know on what you sell to be a good Salesman is to know your products. (personalproexperience) I've heard alot about DELL too not being the best, they are cheap if you need techsupport, but who is the best if you don't know anything about your computer? If do not know anything hit Privates cause they live out of it...simple And one more thing If you feel the seller is not sure of what he is selling just run away :D: SERIOUSLY Last edited by maztraz; Dec 16, 05 at 08:10 PM. |
