Historically a large contingent of artists over the lifetime of earth, who have either made some genuine impact in the way people think, feel, absorb art, or had such a quality of technical skill, that had to respect it - came out of little to no formal trianing! To be honest im just a little bitter(i accept i accept!!) about trash talking brat pack poser mutherfuckers that shit on city college students, or community college students, or artists with no formal education. Im not sure how others feel about, but it pegs me as one of the most amazing hypocricies on the planet!? Im a ECIAD student, and realistically, the name on my student ID means FUCK ALL. Im gonna get what i put in, and alongside personal development, my CLASS and INSTRUCTORS will determine how fulfilling the process will be. |

im in the exact same boat as justa girl....
this is an issue i think about day in and day out.... it drives me crazy... im just goin with the flow for now.... the thing is i cant decide between fine arts and applied arts or accedemic arts.... i got a scholarship for fashion design in high school and was planning on goin to kwantlen for FD.... but i pussied out with not being sure this is what i want to dedicate my life too.... so i spent my money at douglas college taking various courses from philosophy to sociology just testing out the waters.... so right now my plan is to either stay at douglas and transfer to sfu or ubc and get a degree... or to keep building my portfolio and aplly to an art school or a school for fashion design.... (which is what will really satisfy me the most)it sucks being indecisive... all i can do is jus go with it |

you know you can always develop your portfolio outside the hallowed halls of academic or applied or fine arts, as long as your good at goal setting, self conceptualiziation and do it in a diciplined manner. Whos to say you can diversify your skills and talents!? Philosophy? Sociaology? Why not!? You mentioned you gots the fashion skills large, so why not perhaps hook in with lets say a craft collective like seamrippers. Although it is possible to create a very fulfilling and challenging learning environment outside of school, i find it difficult sometimes to duplicate the "instant" community you get through the result of classmates. You could also hook in an aprentice role with some up and commer fashion designers who are looking for assitance that is cheap. (Get in a dialogue with such, trade work, and sweat equity, for the chance to learn from someone more established, but not break out big yet)
You can always do the opposite too. Hit up a specific art/design school. maybe as a mature student, so you dont have program constraints, but if you go in a different direction then initially planned, you still may use the credits of individual classes towards your new direction. You can perhaps satisfy you lust for philosophy or sociology in other avenues - such as political or social activism, various health communities, cultural coillitions, spirtual exploration and such. Good luck :) |

no probs yo!
those who have inclinations towards getting into philosophy/sociology/arts or intensifying their current studies need to be encouraged, and supported!! NO MORE ECONOMISTS!! :) you should check out any grad shows too, and hit up some of the cats their. Just finishing programs, they'll have an interesting take on the current status of programs. Mugsy mentioned she just finished kicking ass @ cap, in this very thread, perhaps you can trade booze for even more insight? Perhaps some market labour studies, and attending some related industry workshops will help too! Industry workshops usually have their share of pretensious fucks, but usually have speakers who have a finger on the pulse of whatever specific field, whether fine/applied/academic arts. Check out some of these resources, there might be some relevant information: -local school based mags, like "front" @ ECIAD -the Aliiance for the Arts off Smythe and Howe http://www.allianceforarts.com/ -the continuing education mags/websites for any schools your interested in, PLUS any related orientation -this link has some resources, including some independant gallery information, of which some support specifically new and young artists http://vaarc.ca/1-resources.html -this is a site, that supports, promotes and connects internet based art galleries, and related projects http://www.year01.com/guide.htm - other resources that might help are centers for the arts such as the Shadbolt Centre, community centers such as Roundhouse, and Theatres and the like. ( I dont know to much about the performing arts though) opportunity is only daunting, until you take it. pc + eez |

cap offers a studio art sampler - best thing if you want to know for yourself whether or not you want to be there. you meet the staff, learn a little from them and get to use the studio a bit. |
