The actor who portrays the irascible Scotsman in the Alexander Keith's beer ads has been charged with possessing child pornography.

Robert Norman Smith, 44, was charged with two counts of possessing child pornography and one count of making child pornography available over the internet.

Toronto police Det. Chris Neal said investigators found more than 1,000 images and videos on a computer.

"Without getting too graphic, the ages of the subjects in this case range from a very young age, some as young as 12 months," he said.

The Toronto actor, a Second City alumnus, portrays the kilt-wearing Keith's lover in a series of popular TV commercials. In one ad, he holds a funeral for a glass of spilled beer.

The Keith's brewery is run by a subsidiary of Labatt Breweries, which said it is pulling the commercials immediately.

"We are surprised to learn of these charges today," Labatt said in a statement Wednesday night. "Clearly, we have decided not to run any future television commercials featuring this actor until this information is confirmed."
