***WARNING: Unfiltered Controversial Thoughts
*** DISCLAIMER *** The following is courtesy of the random fountain of craziness we call my Mind. It is by no means intented to be logical for anyone but me. If you're offended? Well... sorry. I'm just writing what came to my head earlier in a conversation with my Roomate and a Friend.
Racism... so we were discussing racism and I came to the conclusion that everyone is not racist, but everyone that is Human is xenophobic to some degree. If you look at History, a large majority of conflicts have arisen because of the fact that one Group doesn't like another Group. It's all a part of identifying with a Group of people. Take myself for example... You can break me down like this. - Human - Caucasian - Norweigan/Scottish Descent - Red Head, Grey Eyes etc, you get the deal... - My Family - Vancouver Islander (born and raised mofukkas!... starting to notice something?) - Former Air Cadet... (another indentification with a group) - Graduated from my High School in Surrey (as much as I'd much not identify with Surrey...) - Pilot (even that can get broken into sub-groups... commercial, private etc) - Amateur Radio Operator (CW Rated or not...) - Ramp Service Agent (Lead Hand or Rookie) - Teamster - Living in 'sauga... - CANADIAN MOTHERBITCHES!!@@(!)*@)!*( - small 'c' conservative... Get what I mean? Just beacause someone isn't in our group or have the same label as us we treat them differently. It's all just a different scale of things. From the fans of one Soccer Team beating up the other fans of another Soccer Team to World War 2. You're not in my group/association/circle... so fuck you we're better. Now I'm not justifying any of the many atrocities of war/conflict/humanity. Just breaking it down to see why it is and if we can do anything about it. Well, I hate to be a naysayer... but honestly if someone eliminates human conflict and war as we know it, I will personally spit you a wooden nickel whilst standing on my head. I'm by far not the most inspirational or deep person around but I figured I'd write it out before I forgot it. Yes, we are all different but we are all trying to be the same. Trying to be uniform and then trying to rebel. GOTTA LOVE THE HUMAN PARADOX! If you've read this far please refer to _THIS_ |

Racism is just a compartment of the many types of xenophobia is it not? I understand your observation but you need to develop it further beyond matter of fact. We tend to group and relate in a community because it's familiar and reassuring, xenophobia arises from the phobia of the unknown and strange. To understand that phenomena you must look at why we form into the community, an idea which has been discussed ad absurdum. Theres no true answer but there are many logical answers. Hobbes and Locke all discussed this when they attempt to explain the state of nature and why we form into the body politik.
are we all self-interested apes? A bit of a depressing ideology to subscribe to i guess. |

A classic and 2 essentials which lay a lot of foundation. I prefer Locke to Hobbes and the republic is a little bit rediculous. Either way must reads for scienza politico or rapporti internazionale as they call it over here.
Plato's - the republic John Locke - second treatise of civil government Thomas Hobbes - the leviathan especially this: http://oregonstate.edu/instruct/phl3...html#CHAPTERXV "From this equality of ability ariseth equality of hope in the attaining of our ends. And therefore if any two men desire the same thing, which nevertheless they cannot both enjoy, they become enemies; and in the way to their end (which is principally their own conservation, and sometimes their delectation only) endeavour to destroy or subdue one another." Basically this self-interest can be used to explain why we attempt to associate in categories, the familiar is less threatening. You can really go on forever interpreting it in different ways. I'm writing a little article right now called "culture of commodity: the effect of modern class disparity and consumerism on society" it's a working title and the premise isn't solid yet but i'll probably spend a couple weeks on it. |
