In the DVD that i co-created for MAWO, we have a short live video clip of a house raid in Iraq. It was filmed with a nightvison cam, and it was pretty brutal. A man gets hauled off in the middle of the night, his mother sobbing, kids freaking out, pretty intense and completely unimaginable.

Kyle, an Iraqi war resistor who currently lives in Canada (still trying to fight for refugee status) had some pretty intense accounts too. He joined the army thinking he would do his stint doing engineering but was sent to Iraq instead, where he was immedietly part of a team that was doing house to house raids. Eventaully after experiencing countless inhumane situations and one specifc horrific one involving his platoon leader shooting an innocent in the head, execution style, he decided to start his efforts to get the fuck out of Iraq.

I run into cats like you everyday in person. People who come to an event shouting their apathy to the world, chip on their shoulder the size of a truck, and cynacism oozing from every pore. It has been mentioned that the predominant troop deployment demographic in the US to Iraq has been younger men ages 18-23ish and live in middle america -north to south.

When I was 18 I was pure idealism, energy, and hormones. (asides from drugs+alcohol) If I went through highschool consistently bombarded with anti-islamic/middle eastern rhetoric, and hyper-nationalistic US RA RA RA bullshit, then I probably would have been pumped to go defend my country too! Throw in skyrocketing college tuition, perhaps a young wife, the idea that a house, car and a seadoo means i made it, and some ever so slight peer pressure and Im getting ready to go wipe out some raghead muslim terrorists!

Im not trying to nullify the responsibilty of young people to question and research EVERYTHING that revolves around them, but theres definetly something to be said about rampant recruiting that offers the world to small city or rural young cats, who just want to do some good and get into college and then raise a family with a good job and time off to head to the lake.

I do not support ours or the US military, but more than half of these forces are people like i just explained, and it aint just sad, its fucking tragic!

The US/Canadian military is not the "peoples" military. It belongs to the government and international capitalist interest. Im not anti-violence, and I am not against risking death for ones beliefs at this point in my life, but the wars the western nations wage, are war that recruit men and women to die for a lie.

It may seem quite contrary to some and I mean no offence to the men and women who make up the ranks of regular ol'grunts. But if you really, really care about your respective friend/family/partner in the military, then tell them to leave. This is a request based on an authentic love for people, not an ego/capitalist driven, hollow and nationalistic pride. The maple leaf and stars+stripes are mascots for national illusion. Id rather work towards raising a new flag.
