just out of curiosity, if i buy a yearling, how much effort, money and time before it's ready to race? assuming i don't do anything myself. |

you can't buy the cheap yearlings and expect for them to pay for themselves. yearlings as a rule are not a profitable comodity. your best bet is to take the $10,000-$15,000 and find a trainer who will pick out a good horse for you to claim from a race. that way you don't have to fork out the money for day fees, breaking and wintering a horse, and your horse is already racing. there's obvious inherant risks to claiming horses but as a rule it's better than purchasing a yearling. i'll look up the poly track. i know moutaineer park has it and woodbine is putting it down now. neat stuff, all weather, bounces and never sloppy! |

the poly track is a synthetic fiber that will be used to replace the dirt/sand/clay we run on now.
it has more spring and give so it's not as hard on a horses joints and it drains water off instead of trapping it like the old surface. so it never gets sloppy or slippery. you need a trainer to claim the horse with, then you pay the trainer to train the horse and continue the conditioning of it and race it. an average is $50 a day for training. not included is things like vet and shoeing and jocks mount fees and such. but, generaly speaking you CAN run a horse every 2 weeks or so. that means if you do everything right you MIGHT win right back with the horse and break even. then you must continue to win...which doesn't really happen much. http://www.hastingspark.com/racinginfo/entries.aspx if you look at the entries you can see that there's diffrent levels of claiming. it's designed to keep things fair, if you think the horse is nicer than a $10,000 claimer then you put your money where your mouth is and claim it from the race. that way people are less inclined to try to steal races. unless they want to lose the horse because it has problems. understand? then there's the MSW or maiden special weight races. they're for horses who haven't won a race yet but they don't want to put them in a maiden claiming race, they think the horse could be a nice horse one day so it's protected in that race. then there's Stake races. those are the big races, the NICE horses, obviously there's no claiming prices in those. the Jim Coleman Province Stake is this weekend. |

we had another one win today.
Colondelivery won by 3 in a $25,000 claiming race. it was a double tough race and he ran like a champion, he's 7 and has made over $165,000 life time now, which a very good record. he's what we call a class old horse. the purse for BR Remarks race was around $20,000 of which he got 60% the purse for Colondelivery was $13,000 of which he got 60% BR Remark was supposed to be my bosses BC Derby horse last year but he kicked the wall and broke his back leg, it's since healed well obviously since he's just won two in a row! the BIG HORSE in our barn right now is Bound To Be MVP. he's a 3yr old colt by Snowbound. we ran him 3 times last year as a 2yr old and he was 3 for 3. he then went to Southern California to run against the BEST sprinters in his age group in the Grade 2 San Miguel Handicap and a Grade 3 Stake, he ran 3rd and 5th against the best sprinters in north america! he's our derby horse this year, and we're SO excited about him! he's a massive grey who's like a puppy to be around, he's so very kind. it's been my experience that this class of horse is usualy much smarter, kinder and quieter than the rest. they're the thinking type who win not just on talent but because they want to and know how to. i've got his 2yr old brother by Desert Wine who's looking to be equally as nice, his name is Sahra Sam. just a couple of our exciting horses. we also have the full brother to a mare named Elana D'amour. she won 6 stakes races as 3yr old and second in all her other starts. she made over $300,000 here and retired sound. as a 3yr old she won horse of the year, 3yr old of the year, filly of the year and her mother won broodmare of the year! she took the cake that year, and now we have her 2yr old full brother we call Alan. he's doing everything right just like she did. needless to say we're looking forward to his future. my bosses dad trained Elana D'amour. he only had 2 horses that year and she was one of them. what amazing horsemen. my boss although he's canadian born and raised trained in Maccau, a gambling island off the coast of Hong Kong. he also trained in Maylasia and his boss sent him to ireland, new zealand and australia to buy horses. his wifes dad is leading trainer in Maylasia, and my boss became fluent in Malay and speaks some chinese and mandarin. he's only in his late 30's and he's been so many amazing places as a trainer, he told me he could train in Dubai if he wanted. it's a dream of mine to work in Dubai one day. he's so much fun to be around and work for. he's got things in perspective. |
