A fun job vs. a well paying job
I really can't stand my job anymore. Been here for about 7 years and I don't think I can do it anymore. I don't wanna quit and come back realizing that other jobs aren't worth working because it doesn't match this one in pay.
Any thoughts on weighing up my options? |

what is going to make the rest of your life better....waking up happy, excited to go to work, and bringing that home with you, or dreading the alarm clock, frowning all day and being sour afterwards?
it is a tough call, but i think happiness is much more imprtant then money. you may never see me with an expensive car or a pocket full of cash, but you will always see me with a smile on my face. |

QUIT!!
that is all... lol in all honesty though as hellish as it is you have a sweet deal there maybe ask vic if you can take a "leave" and try something else for awhile i know paycuts suck but you cant put a price on happiness (so cheese but so true :p) and if youre half as miserable as i was then i would try something else maybe something more relevant to your career where you would gain experience instead of $ which in the long run will amount to more $ just try to keep your options open :) |

Hey Stratfish -- hot avatar!
Chris buddy... money does pay the bills however your job is also about keeping challenged, continuing to learn new things and ultimately increasing your value in the workforce. It is a hot labour market right now and if your current position is not providing you with any of these things, then you need to look elsewhere for a company that can give you that opportunity. Otherwise staying in the same job doing the same shit over and over and over will decrease your value as time goes on. Keep in mind that it isn't just about the job but also the company you're working for and the people that are working for it. |

I'd be fine with a job that pays decently and doesn't keep me awake at night, it doesn't have to be fun, but I do want to maintain some kind of decent work/life balance, I tend to get really bored if a job is too 'fun' and i'm not really challenged enough.

Do what you love - doing it because it pays well can be a serious trap.
Take it from me; I'm 30 and after 14 years, I'm no longer particularly thrilled with the computer industry. However, I now have a mortgage, and switching to a new career would mean at least a 50% pay cut for several years, even more if I chose to go back to school. So basically, if I were to quit my job now, I would literally lose the farm. They call it "golden handcuffs". Watch out for it - if you let yourself get too comfortable with the big paycheques, |

Anyways, back to the point. yeah it is a tough call but I agree with brittney (sp? too lazy to check). Keep your eyes open for other oppurtunities and if another job matches, comes close to or exceeds in pay and provides an opportunity to learn something new, go for it. Personally, "fun" isn't exactly a word that I constantly associate with a paid job. I mean, there are times where fun is involved... but as long as the job is challenging, I learn a lot and work in a supportive environment, get paid fairly and work for a company with great benefits and lots of room and opportunity to move up, then I'd be more than happy.. and that's pretty much where I am now. |

thanks for the words of wisdom guys.
I say "fun" jobs, because of dealing with people that are working in the restaurant or the entertainment business and all their co-workers are of the same age and have common interests. My dislike of my current job is that I basically used to be an integral part of this company and it wouldn't function without me around, but going to school for 2 years fulltime they've obviously found ways around that(with me coming in to train part time). Now it is fully functional and I'm here fulltime for the summer, but i'm helping out people that I trained, or were trained by people I trained, and I'm doing all the mediocre tasks and feel like I'm just wasting away. I got asked today if I knew how to look up a website... Bitch, I set that fuckin website up. I'm gonna talk to the boss and tell him how feel and hopefully he'll put me onto something more challenging. Any job that pays this well would require me to commit to them, and with fulltime school, this probably won't happen |
