eagle ridge dispute
Discuss..
http://www.canada.com/theprovince/ne...c68465&k=16556 Don't get me wrong, I love animals and the outdoors but, I think those environmentalists are out of their minds. This is BC, a delevoping province.. If its not here they will tear down some other peice of land.. We do have quite alot of it. The olympics are on the way, and a better roadway to support all the people is needed !! |

Are most of the protesters NIMBY's?
Yes. Will there be environmental degradation due to the highway upgrades? Yes. Do we need to upgrade the Highway? NO! Not at all! The reasons being given by the proponents for this EXPEN$$$IVE upgrade mostly centre around the Olympics and how we have to be able to move _ALL_ these people back and forth from Whistler. FUCK OFF!!!!!!!!!!!!! If _anyone_ had any fucking concern, whatsoever, about the international community coming here, they'd be supporting increases to PUBLIC FUCKING TRANSPORTATION, muthafuckers!!!!! What kind of dumbass argument would want people from around the planet to have to rent their own vehicles or coaches to get back and forth on the Ski to Die Highway?! Seems none of these same proponents has ever travelled to other parts of the globe, before. Ya want people to visit? Ya make it EASY to visit! Expand public transit! Make it _simple_ to get around! Easy-access arrive/depart stations! Economical, and environmentally-friendly! Let them have drinks on a train, back and forth! Less loogans on the road to kill themselves (and others)! (I'm not even going to play the "Gas-Price" card) The super-rich elite (and let's face it, this _IS_ an elitist event) can easily hire their own private limos to take them back and forth. For the ones spending hard-earned cash to attend an event they feel passionate about, getting around should be the LEAST of their worries! Frosty (sick of skewed arguments) |

While I sympathize with this perspective and agree with you in some ways there is a bigger picture. The simple breakdown is this. Whistler is a huge source of tax revenue. The people going there are on vacation and want to travel by their own vehichle. The highway as it was did not meet the needs of the traffic going up it. While my perspective is largely anecdotal I do have a good base of knowledge for this perspective. I worked for intrawest for 3 years selling vacations in Whistler (and every other destination) and most people wanted to rent a car. Call these people eletist if you want and dislike them for being this way but this is a business case. While I would like to see a train link which I think would be more popular that's not what was decided on.
This does not reflect my ideals it reflects what I see as the reality of this situation. Quote:

that was a silly thing to say. enough trees and land? the more we build, the further we have to go to get to these "playgrounds" which is only going to increase urban sprawl. it is atrocious that they are trying to build through eagle ridge. its OUR money spent, and its not going to be money WE see back when the olympics come and pass anyways. so what is the point? if anything, we'll get bled dry from inflation. |

They could've built a tunnel and not destroyed more animal habitat. Instead, the Canadian police again cave to American interrests and murder otherwise useful land in the name of progress. Will they put a toll on that stupid fucking road? Never. Yet we all still have to pay $10 to visit the rest of Canada. Fuck every rich cunt who goes to Whistler. You suck.
