The term "mainstream radical Islam" stems from Islamaphobic terminology that has now become entrenched as structural/institutional racism.

looks like they were planning to hit targets really soon. Looking at some pictures that were released as to what he police seized... They were using remote detonator's that would be triggered by cell phones.... Simple concept but they abosolutely know what they were doing here...

Quote:
Many people may believe that terrorism is something that only happens outside Canada’s borders, but a series of arrests have proven that the threat of attacks on Canadian soil is very real.
-No. "Most" Canadians have no idea what "terrorism" means anymore. Is it reletive to the size of your turban? Is it reletive to the size of your Kohran? In fact its reletive to your position in the Canadian government, and what capitalist interest you have.

Quote:
On Saturday the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and Canada’s spy agency divulged disturbing details of an alleged terror plot that involved plans for attacks on targets across southern Ontario.
-Who actaully uses "spy agency" outside of mainstream journalists? "Alleged terror plot" is right behind, "would you like fries with that?" as commonly used/heard phrases.

Quote:
Officials say they foiled that plot after a lengthy investigation that resulted in the arrests of 12 men and five youths Friday night. More than 400 officers from federal and local forces carried out a series of raids across the G.T.A.
-With Canadian Security Certificates, CSIS and RCMP agents can arrest ANYONE "alleged of terrotist activity" with no evidence, no warrants, no nothing outside of an allegation. Currently atleast 5 men of middle eastern descent are serving jail time (solitary confinement for over 300 days to date) with no actauly evidence holding them there.

Quote:
R.C.M.P. Assistant Commissioner Mike McDonell said some of those arrested were Canadian citizens and all were Canadian residents.

“This group posed a real and serious threat. It had the capacity and intent to carry out these acts,” he explained. “Our investigation and arrests prevented the assembly of any bombs and the attacks from being carried out.”

These individuals allegedly purchased three tonnes of ammonium nitrate – a commonly used fertilizer – to make explosives.
-Theres that word again!

Quote:
In order to help the public grasp the full scale of this group’s alleged capability to cause death and destruction, McDonell compared the amount of ammonium nitrate the R.C.M.P. seized to the amount used in the Oklahoma City bombing.
-Give the public a tangible representation of what "could" happen in their backdoor. Currently some statistics show that the likelyhood of being targeted in a terrorist attack is still somewhere in the vicinity of getting hit by lightening.

Quote:
“If I can put this in context for you, the 1995 bombing in Oklahoma City that killed 168 people was completed with only one tonne of ammonium nitrate,” he said.
-Context! FUCK YOU! COntext is that the RCMP where created to oppress Indegenous peoples. Context is the RCMP has built a reputation of racism, protecting capitalist interest, and being the primary agent of the Canadian government to further divide, and intimidate a population.

Quote:
A computer tower and a cellphone that was hooked up to an apparent explosive device were also allegedly seized during the raids.
-How many times can "alleged" be used in an article, before a population uses said article as bird cage liner? I personally have three computer towers in my house, and a multiude of items that "could" be explosive devices.

Quote:
Officials wouldn’t say what the intended targets were, but they did confirm that the T.T.C. was not one of them.
-THERES TERRORISTS! THEYRE EVERYWHERE! but we wont tell you where, and what they want.

Quote:
“There was never any threat or any indication that there might be a threat against public transportation generally or in the T.T.C. specifically,” Toronto Police Chief Bill Blair explained.
-really!?

Quote:
“But at the same time, we know from other jurisdictions, London and Madrid, that public transportation can be a target. And so we work hard with partners at the T.T.C. and with GO to ensure a safe system for all the people who use it.”
-More guns for transit police!!! WOOHOO!

Quote:
According to published reports, a downtown C.S.I.S. building near the C.N. Tower and the Parliament buildings were on the hit list.
-"spy agencies" and governmental offices have been on the "hit list" across the world for centuries

Quote:
McDonell said these suspects represent the “broad strata” of society – some were students, some employed and others unemployed – but Luc Portelance of the Canadian Security and Intelligence Service (C.S.I.S.) said they shared a violent ideology inspired by al-Qaida.
-"violent ideaology"? You mean they wanted to send in massive troop deployment, month long carpet bomb raids, depleted Uraniam bullets, white phosphorous, kill children in checkpoints because they couldnt read the sign(they couldnt read period) set up an environment for foreign business, massive domestic layoffs, dissolved social structure ALL FOR DEMOCRACY too?????

Quote:
“Any movement that has the ability to turn people against their fellow citizens is obviously something C.S.I.S. is very concerned about,” he said. “We work closely with our partners domestically and internationally to ensure that terrorists don't attack our country or our citizens.”
So CSIS is going to be investigating the Canadian Government too? Polarization is what happends when a national administration/their police+military, and the capitalist interest they protect, pull away from the people of said nation so far, that the public opinion is galvanized to extremes. Polarization may be intense, but necessary in light of what the fuck is going in the world.

Quote:
Officials wouldn’t say if the suspects had travelled outside of the country for training at terrorist camps. They were all scheduled to appear in a Brampton court Saturday.
Trips to detroit!!!!!!?!?!?!!? NOOOOOOOO!!!

Quote:
While the details of this alleged terror plot has likely shot chills up the spines of people across the country and especially across the city, Blair tried to ease shaken nerves.
-NO!!!!!! FUCK YOU! The only chills that are being sent are ones of disgust, disenfranchisment, confusion, apathy, cynicism, and anger, lots of anger.

Quote:
“I think the people of Toronto should be greatly reassured that law enforcement has effectively neutralized that threat,” he said.
-I think the people of Toronto would rather know the truth.

Quote:
McDonell encouraged members of the public who may have any information regarding terrorism or any type of criminal extremism to call the National Security Tip Line at 1-800-420-5805.
-Classic stiring up of distrust, and paranoia. Come on people, how many times do we have to go through this????

Quote:
To see unedited video of R.C.M.P. and C.S.I.S. officials commenting on the arrests, click here.
-Great, another recruitment film.

A list of 12 people charged:

Fahim Ahmad, 21, of Toronto

Zakaria Amara, 20, of Mississauga

Asad Ansari, 21, of Mississauga

Shareef Abdelhaleen, 30, of Mississauga

Qayyum Abdul Jamal, 43, of Mississauga

Mohammed Dirie, 22, Kingston, Ontario;

Yasim Abdi Mohamed, 24, Kingston, Ontario;

Jahmaal James, 23, of Toronto

Amin Mohamed Durrani, 19, Toronto

Steven Vikash Chand alias Abdul Shakur, 25, of Toronto,

Ahmad Mustafa Ghany, 21, of Mississauga

Saad Khalid, 19, of Mississauga
-Young men who are atleast partially of middle eastern descent

Quote:
Five youths were also arrested who cannot be identified.
-If they are caucasian its " a few dumb kids lighting off some harmless pipebombs"

-but if its "brown skinned" kids its " a few muslim youths engaging in alleged terrorist activity, HANG THEM! HANG THEM!

Quote:
All are charged with contributing to the activities of a terrorist group by training or recruitment, the commission of firearms and explosives for the benefit of a terrorist group, and providing or making available property for terrorist groups.
-National (IN)Security Act

Thanks for the Maple. Heres my "conspiracy theory:"

Currently in that part of Canada there is serious friction erupting over the six nations dispute. Only a week ago Caledonians where blockading protestors from getting in our out of the six nations camp. When violence erupted OPP stood back fucking eachother with their nightsticks. They wanted this because the Canadian government wants this. Angst and division of people who actaully have similiar interests.

And to further accelerate the paranoia, rage, and confusion another case which was probably quite trivial is blown up to terrorist porportions. Why? Because while the population of regular people are at eachothers throats, other young men and women (like you) can be sent to other nations to stir up the same sort of chaos that is being stirred up here, and beyond in the effort of imperialist/capitalist agenda.

Hows that application for the RMC coming along?

fable, you sound like a textbook.

that aside, i agree that systemic islamaphobic racism and racist policies have grown. it's pretty sad how the word 'terrorist' now brings up certain images of certain kinds of people and certain faiths.

This coming from a poli-sci student from UBC hahahahahahaha!!!! :)

I seriously doubt that there is any "textbook" out there(n.america, anyways) that is currently tackling anything close to contemporary Islamaphobia.

^sociology and creative writing major actually ;)

i meant, that just sounds like my textbooks, with the terminology you used. and although the textbooks i have used don't really touch on this subject, i've had profs that have voiced opinions on the matter of islamaphobic systemic racism, with regards especially to the media and transportation issues (meaning airports and borders)

It is sad, but unsurprisingly the stereotype of the terrorist holds true in this list. Looks like they all are of Arab ethnicity from Saudi Arabia or nearby countries. Just like the 9/11 guys.

Most ANFO requires a detonator to set off and a few dumb kids lighting off some pipebombs do not need 3 tonnes of it.

Regardless of race, anyone who has that much explosives on hand that doesn't have a license should be seriously looked at.

Are you suggesting that they are innocent and are just being picked on because of their race? It seems to me you picked apart the article without actually adressing the fact that they had explosives and other items of illegal nature.

I agree with what you are saying about the press and Canadian population in general but if your insinuating that these guys shouldn't be arrested then I will have to disagree.

yeah, i was just saying how it's sad that the vast majority of muslims who aren't terrorists, now have their faith and the colour of their skin fused with terrorism and blowing up stuff.

the media has a very powerful way of fusing images and people and ideas together, lumping an entire group of people into a category that a minority of them has created.

it's not easy however when, like you said, the images and names being dropped totally reinforce this idea. maybe the media needs to counter these stereotypes being created by showing more positive sides of muslim faith. we have been so bombarded with negative muslim images in the the last five years that, i think, it's hard for people to sort it all out and gain perspective.

but if you show a certain kind of people in association with a certain kind of idea over and over and over again, and never really show the other side of the picture, then it's going to taint people's views.

On my original flight to Florida I was supposed to connect in DC which made me a little nervous...I guess it's kind of convenient that I'm now on a direct flight :P

Im more of the opinion of Sidekick. Although a tad fecicious my example was speaking more in terms of racial profiling and how "explosives," and related terminology almost come with tag that has a picture of a mid twenties-middle eastern man on it.

When i hear the words fertilizer, and alleged(atleast 5 times) in the same article, i grow very, very skeptical.

You and I both don't have all the information, but which line we choose to follow in terms of forming an opinion is important. A lot of things in large quantities can be explosive, a lot of things can be alleged, and a lot of young people could be agressive and radical. I am not saying that people who are genuinely suspected should be free to go, but we must examine the nature of "suspect," always, and in an environment where anti-muslim/aram sentiment is synthetically breeded, its imperative that we analyze far further than reading a newspaper article.

But lets also put an emphasis on assigning or at the very least inquiring into WHY? and WHO WOULD IT BENEFIT AND WHERE?
