Laptops: Which one is better?
Buying a lappy this weekend. Need advice:
http://www.bestbuy.ca/catalog/prodde...02&catid=20354 http://www.staples.ca/ENG/Catalog/ca...fixedCode=WW&= both the same price, similar specs. What I really want to know is if anyone here has any experience with either brand. For instance, I've heard that HP's customer service is excellent, but I haven't heard too much about Gateway's service. Yea, pretty much stuff like that. Or if you have another recommendation for a similar price, I'd be open to that as well. I just want to make sure I make the best choice. |

when i was buying my laptop, i compared all the brands at the big stores like best buy and future shop and found that i got the best value from dell. check their site every week - they seem to have some kind of different promotion every week like a free harddrive upgrade, free shipping, free this or that, etc. And regarding customer service, dell was the pioneer in that field. prices are very competitive, if not cheaper than the HPs, toshibas, etc.
^ thats a sweet avitar! |

I bought that same HP 3 weeks ago and love it. i have had no problems, it is super quick and i love the screen and the remote is a lazy bastards dream when watching a dvd.
the only thing i didnt know is that you need to buy special discs for the lightscribe. which i may do, because it seems cool and i like stupid shit like that. this comp. was the best option for me because it had everything i wanted and more, for a good price. i am happy. |

I posted this question on another forum, and was also recommended to check out Dell.
I was given a link: http://www1.ca.dell.com/content/prod...HS1&l=en&s=dhs With all the bells and whistles, it's a tad over my price range, but the bang to buck ratio one gets is def. there. More to think about. Ooh, I didn't realize the HP came with a remote. All these bells and whistles...what is this 'Lightscribe' you speak of? Last edited by Magi; Jun 08, 06 at 09:55 AM. |

get a powerbook 15" throw in a bit of extra ram and you're styling.
But understand that a percentage of the extra money you pac for a mac is for nothing more than "syle + hype" I still believe they are more reliable, and overall better units than anything you can get from dell and especially gateway. Last edited by fable; Jun 08, 06 at 10:11 AM. |

I have two laptops, one's a toshiba satellite and the other is an LG. I recommend both, even though my LG is in repair at the moment. The toshiba definitely has some neat features, is fast, you get lots of space and lots of ram. The LG is light and portable and good for hauling around to classes and such.
When you're buying a laptop, take into consideration a few things: What are you going to be using it for (school, business, recreational?) What do you want your computer to do and then add about 10% to that (IE: If you're playing video games on it, it might be nice to get one with a larger hard drive and more ram, saves you money in the long run) Make sure you look into the extended warrenty and check all the stipulations. Most of the time the laptop will break within the first year, in which you will have it covered, as far as Futureshops warrenty is concerned, it's not worth the money, they only cover parts and labour and by the time it breaks (after the year warrenty from the manufacturer) your computer won't be worth it Is a big screen a big deal do you, or do you want a lighter computer, again ties into what you're using it for? Check the battery life, many only last an hour and if you're using it for something that requires longer, go for a Centrino processor because it will extend the battery life. The Gateway tends not to have good quality processors Check the return on it, do they give you a month to return it, a couple weeks, etc, believe me it helps when you've bought something and then decide that you want something different Check what programs and software it comes with, many only come with a 40 day microsoft Word or no word at all and that sucks if you need a processing program Hope this helps, I know how confusing it can be when buying a laptop, go with your gut in the end, your instincts are usually right. if you want to know anything about HP notebooks talk to me.... seriously.... now if your looking to do music producing on a notebook DO NOT and I mean DO NOT use a 4200 rpm hdd... same thing with using the celeron centrino or sempron powernow technologies.... Even for gaming... Stear away from it....
