a finback whale surfacing while the tufted puffins "swim" across the surface of the water to get out of the way of our ferry.
the puffins had gorged themselves on so much fish that they couldn't get off the water to fly and so they flapped their wings to sort of swim on the surface.
hahaha silly fatties.
I'M IN SAND POINT NOW!
WOOP
the sunrise reflecting off the deck beside the galley on the morning of the third day we spent at sea.
this trip on the alaska marine highway was freaking amazing.
same morning, different angle.
more to come!
so, when you get your ferry ticket you're given the option of:
a) pay an extra $100/person for a state room bunk
b) sleep on the floor of the lounge in on the bow of the boat
c) sleep in a chair in the lounge on the bow of the boat
d) sleep in the open air solarium on the top of the boat under ceiling mounted heaters like mini versions of the ones you see on outside patios for coffee shops/bars
e) pitch a tent on the back of the deck behind the solarium in almost hurricane force winds
these are some of the tents that didn't blow away....
so, i woke up at like 1 am from my place in my little sleeping bag on the floor of the lounge, freaking the f*** out.
i was certain death was imminent.
certain.
the seas in the northern part of the gulf of alaska were so rough.
we were so close to the bering sea, it felt like we were on it.
all i could think about were the scenes of 30-40' rogue waves on my favorite reality tv show, THE DEADLIEST CATCH.
it felt like freaking whales were ramming the hull of our ferry.
it was pitch black, and i could hear the spray of the "rouge" waves hitting the window above my head in the forward lounge.
i was freaking out.
just a little.
turns out, the waves were only about twice the size of the ones in this picture.
still.
it was scary, OK?
lol
